The Treo Goes Overseas

Posted by Harry McCracken | Thursday, June 09, 2005 9:33 AM PT

I'm about to go to Paris on vacation, and I'm taking my Treo 650 with me--and hoping that it will not only work, but serve as one of my major means of communications during the trip.

Cingular tells me that I should be able to roam in France, but just in case, I'm also one of the many Treo owners who convinced Cingular to unlock my phone, which should let me buy a low-cost prepaid SIM card for use on the continent.

If you've got a Treo, have you taken it on international travel? Any travel tales, good or bad, to share?

A colleague at work told me his Treo 600 worked great as a phone in Italy once he purchased a prepaid SIM card in Italy.

T-mobile Treo 600 worked great in Paris, GPRS kept me connected to email for free!

I use my unlocked Cingular Treo 650 in Egypt (with a Vodaphone sim), in China (with a China Mobile sim), in Israel (with an Orange sim) and I roamed in Thailand, Morocco but not in Japan which is not a GSM network.

I own a Blackberry 7100g--but in terms of Cingular's International Roaming service and unlimited data plan working in Europe using a quad band phone-- I was able to place and receive calls and emails, and had all my email properly forwarded in Germany and in Greece. I was also able to keep my U.S. cell phone number, which turned out to be a great convenience for people trying to reach me. It also made dialing easier in some cases as I didn't have to bother with country codes when dialing back out to the U.S, meaning I could dial direct from my address book. Getting local SIM cards is certainly cheaper, especially if you plan on making more than two or three calls per day, but for short stays, the convenience of keeping your old number is significant....Safe travels

I have an unlocked Treo 600 and spend much time in the UK, US, Australia and have business trips to HK, Mexico etc. No problem either with using my T-mobile SIM card or putting in a local sim card. If you are unlocked, you are fine.

I live in New Delhi and am using my Treo 650 (unlocked GSM) with no issues with Hutch as my sim service provider. Web access with GPRS is glacial and finicky with the bundled browser, but it works. I have also used it successfully in Bangalore.

Just back from France this week, including Paris and Provence. My Cingular Treo 650 worked perfectly - cell phone coverage was great, and email was fast. My phone is not unlocked.

I have a "reverse question" : I will be visiting the USA from South Africa - can I buy a prepaid USA sim card to use with my South african phone ? I just returned from Switzerland, & used a Swiss sim card in my phone - it worked great. Can I do this in the US ?

I will be travelling to London, Paris, Amsterdam this summer and would love to know if I can use my Treo 650. Anyone has any knowledge on this? I'm not crazy about unlocking my device and buying sim cards that I'll probably never use again.
Please let me know what you think.
