I already told you how to opt out of lots of junk mail lists (see Had Enough of Marketing Hell? Opt Out).
Just recently, readers have sent me messages about new two services. Both send your contact info to a hefty assortment of marketing baboons and tell them that you want your name removed from their mailing lists.

The first service is ProQuo. The site lists 17 direct marketing firms; you can opt out of most with one click. Some demand you send an actual paper letter that -- get ready -- you'll need to mail. Like with a stamp. However, ProQuo supplies the letter along with your name and address filled in. All you need to do it print and mail it.

Catalog Choice is another free Web service that tackles individual catalogs, such as L.L. Bean, Ann Taylor, Smith & Hawken -- well over 100 companies. Catalog Choice has an ulterior motive -- stewardship of the Earth's resources. They want to help reduce unwanted catalogs while conserving our natural resources.

The waste associated with junk mail hits us in 3 ways: 1) cutting down trees releases CO2 into atmosphere and reduces our ability to absorb CO2, 2) requires energy (read: CO2) to produce and transport, and 3) generates more greenhouse gases as the waste sits in landfills. I read recently that we generate 32 pounds of unrecycled junk mail *waste* per person annually in the U.S.! There are lots of these services popping up, including www.greendimes.com and the DMA's own service www.dmachoice.org.
