Do you have a better mousetrap? Before you head for your favorite venture capitalist, use this [relatively] cheap three dimensional printer in your home office to create a prototype.
I'm not kidding.
3D Printers for Everyone
Tom Lenzo's a friend and knows about three dimensional printers. He worked with the industry pioneer, 3-D Systems, over 20 years ago when they were a start-up. At $100,000, "I couldn't invest in them at the time," he said. (Right, like you could spend $100K on one now?) But he's jazzed about what he just found out.
"Times have changed," he said, and that's because you might be able to get a 3D printer this year from Desktop Factory for about $5000. And if you have money to burn, 3-D Systems plans to have one for under $10,000. (New York Times)

The Desktop Factory 3D printer reminds me of the first HP laser printer I owned. It's enormous -- 25- by 20- by 20-inches -- and a hefty 90 pounds. The largest model the printer can produce is 5- by 5- by 5-inches.

Me, I think $5000 is still on the high side. I'll wait until I can get one at Costco for $49.95. I just worry about the cost of cartridges.
