Users are reporting problems with Tuesday's patch from Microsoft. (See yesterday's "Grab Essential MS07-017 Windows Patch" posting.)
I received a handful of e-mails from readers experiencing a DLL problem. For instance, Sherryl B. said:
"I downloaded and installed the patch as you suggested. Now I'm getting this error message:"'The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL in C:\WINDOWS\system32\HHCTRL.OCX occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.'
"I have no clue as to who the vendor is or which application it's referring to.
RealTek vs. Microsoft
Microsoft confirmed that the problem is a conflict between the recent patch and DLLs from Realtek's HD Audio Control Panel. Microsoft provided a new patch, available here.
Free Help from Microsoft
If you're still having problem after installing the new patch, you can get free tech support from Microsoft Product Support Services by calling (866) 727-2338.
Wow! Yet another example of how dangerous updating ANYTHING on your system can be. In this particular update, I think it was worth the risk to get the ANI patch but who would have thought after four months of testing, a change fixing Animators cursors would affect a sound control panel.
The trend for programs, including Windows to provide AutoUpdates! just scares the bageebers out of me

Thanks for the follow-up Steve! My roommates' puter was doing the same thing and I admit I was just as stumped and scratching my head since the error message really didn't give an application to go with it. I hadn't broken down yet to do a lengthy Knowledge Base search which I wasn't looking forward to. You saved me some time and effort once again!
As always....You rock, Steve!

I always enjoy your articles a great deal. I found the discussions in The Round Table enlightening and already had much of the same apprehensions about switching to Vi$ta. I think I'll stick to XP for another 2 to 3 years. My biggest beef is that I noticed that all the guest panelist were sitting to one side of the table. Upon further examination I realized the table was not round, but in fact square. No, wait rectangular! How can you call this discussion a "Round Table" when it is blatantly not round? Is this some form of subversion by Micro$oft to distract us?

The recently released Microsoft security patch (KB925902) disables the EPG and digital TV programme recording functions in Arcsoft's TotalMedia 3.
I got the same problem after Tuesday's windows security update. So I went to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935448/ and tried to get the fix. But it does not work. I get an error message that reads like this and cannot download the fix:
C:\Documents and Settings\Arata \Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\LEZ4NAHA\WindowsXP-KB935448-x-86-ENU[1].exe is not a valid Win 32 application
What can I do?
There is a better solution. Realtek has released new drivers as of 30March2007:

I just installed the XP version 1.64 after installing Microsoft's security patch and all access to the Realtek audio control panel is restored. I won't be installing Microsoft's Hotfix for this issue.
BTW, there are new Vista drivers at the above Realtek page also.

I was wondering, most of the comments I have heard about Vista has been installing it and the headaches it has caused. Is it the same if you buy it installed? Aside from your software not working on it......does the darn thing run well preinstalled on a new computer? LOL
I have aways thought for the most part unless you are a real geek that installing a new OS in an old computer would be like putting a car motor into a bicycle....that is just my opinion.......LOL
