Exclusive: Google Announces Free In-Home Wireless

Google announce TiSP a free, in-home wireless broadband service. The free service is limited to 8 Mbps. Increased bandwidth costs $10 per month for 16 Mbps and $25 per month for 32 Mbps.

The free sign up gets you a TiSP self-installation kit, which includes an installation CD, a quick setup guide, fiber-optic cable, spindle, and wireless router.

The program is open to any resident of the United States.

I've been on the beta for a month and find the service a no-brainer to use (and installation was easy, too).

Google TiSP is still in beta (hey, isn't everything from Google in beta?), so I recommend you keep your regular broadband connection.

User Grumbling
Not everyone using Google's TiSP is happy:

"I live in a mobile home and drove away without disconnecting. It worked for a short time, about 200 ft and abruptly stopped. There should be some kind of warning about this on the install kit."

Another user complained about packet loss:

"The lag is just awful -- I can't play online games. And twice I had big packet loss. No way, Google, you can flush this service because no one's going to use it."

Some people had trouble finding the signup link:

"I would like to try this free service from google to use the TiSP Internet access, but there is no where to order. Can someone point me in the right direction?"

Question: Would you give up your broadband connection for a freebie from Google?

This rocks! I'm dropping my current ISP. Now, my wife can simply bring me food and I can work in one place all day (just give me a foam cushion seat and I'll give you a courtesy flush). The best part is that flatulence actually increases bandwidth. Misspelling of the mathematical term for a 1 followed by 100 zeros, this is awesome!

I just tried it and it rocks!! Did have some issues getting a good connection but on calling the PHD at the other end, he was able to route the call from Bangalore, India to Crawfordville, Texas where a high-school educated tech was able to fix the issue- communication issues I think!!

I am amazed at how fast this is for how cheap this is! 3-gallons of mindblowing internet access! And it's so cheap, it's free!
And I've ALWAYS tried to stick long objects down my toilet but the mother always told me I wasn't supposed to, but now I have an excuse!

I'm so glad the toilet is finally being brought into the spotlight like it deserves. It takes care of your excretion, your hangover, your old pictures of your STUPID ex, that disgusting prune juice that your grandma forces you to drink or else you get a slappin', and now thanks to Google, your internet connection!

Thanks Google!

I tried to sign up, but it took me to the installation process page. Also to it asks for 10 purchasing using google checkout for getting this benefit.

WHAT'S THE CATCH? Google is not in the habbit of giving things away. Does anyone know what would this ultimately cost us?
