Time Killer: Coffin Has Handy Panic Button

Posted by Steve Bass | Wednesday, November 29, 2006 12:07 PM PT

Feeling a little stuffy? Not a problem -- unless you've been stuffed in a coffin when you're still alive and kicking. It's not something I ever thought about -- until now, because Vitaly Malyukov, an inventor from Russia, built a coffin with a button inside that lets you alert someone on the outside that you need, well, assistance. Pressing the button sets off an alarm in the caretaker's building. (From Sci-Fi Tech.) [Thanks, Kim!]

Hey Steve The Russian,s too late with his invention. It seems the Brits had the same idea back in the 1500 hundreds? They would tie a string to your finger which was then attached to a bell above ground. If you needed " assistance" you simply rang the bell if you did,nt you where called a "Dead Ringer" hence the expression.Just so you know. Hey Steve, BEAR,
To expand on BEAR's story...
Someone was required to be posted alongside the grave for 24 hours. If the person who was buried DID actually pull the string and ring the bell, the coffin would be dug up, opened, and the person would be released from confinement. This became known as "Saved by the bell".
