AVG Antivirus is Still Free (Stop Worrying)

Posted by Steve Bass | Wednesday, November 08, 2006 10:26 AM PT

I received a note from a buddy on one of my lists. He was in a panic. "I just received a notification from AVG anti virus that as of January 2007 it will no longer be free."

Nope, that's not true. Grisoft's AVG just has a newer version. Support for all prior free versions will end in January, 2007.

You can head to the free download page to pick up the new version. What's easier, though, is to follow the links in AVG's auto pop-up. Either way, once you've downloaded the new version, launch it and follow AVG's instructions and do what they refer to as a "repair" to replace and update the older version.

If you need more info, read the AVG FAQ (specifically item number 47).

I'm interested in the antivirus program you use -- and if you're happy with it. Tell me below in Comments.

For antivirus, I use AVG Free Edition. It has yet to let me down after a few years of using it now, and for the price you pay, no other antivirus software can compete, in my opinion.

I use the new AVG and for my archaic PC its wonderful. Hogs less resources than any other and still provides resident, on access scanning.

You turned me onto avast. I like it's quick library updates. My firm uses AVG. I didn't like that it adds a AVG comment line at the end of emails, so I don't use it. Consumer report also listed both highly in their reviews and tops in Free offering.

pwcislo: The e-mail comment line can be easily (well, okay, not so easily) in AVG's "E-Mail Scanner" Properties page.

Once there, uncheck "Certify mail" for both incoming and outgoing mail. The e-mail will still be checked, but AVG won't insert a comment.

I've used many fee and free anti-virus applications over the years, but now use and love AVG 7.5 exclusively. It updates very frequently as required, passes the tests I've tried, and stays reliable without interfering with other applications I run. - Leo

The number 47 mentioned, in the FAQ
should probably be 475 (?)

McAfee clogged my system memory.
Symantic/Norton is virtually impossible to "remove"

AVG Free has done a good job for me for a number of years, and the signature updates are more frequent recently. (a good thing)

I'm so pleased with it I'm considering their paid bundle so I don't have to keep track of Ad-Aware, MS Firewall, etc. updates.

BUT -- "FREE" is good!

and - yes - it is FAQ 475

I use 'advast' and love it, and it to is free. I have friends that use 'avg' and like it as well, however I am not about to switch, but if I ever lost the free 'advast' I would certainly try 'avg'

I'm glad someone responded to the guy complaining about the tag line on the end of e-mails. If I had a nickel for every person who complained about something who never bothered to read or look into matters I'd be rich. Day in and day out I receive calls from clients in a panic over some feature or warning or other, and after calming them down I politely point out that if they had taken 2 seconds to READ it, they would have figured it out by themselves. Which is the point of my comment: 9 out of 10 computer users can't read!

I too have upgraded to AVGFree7.5 mainly because i am a long time user

and like the idea of using familiar, proven quality software. I am also

a long time user of the all important excellent Registry Mechanic from

PCTools and therefor came to know about their new Anti-Virus Free

Edition 3.1. I wonder if Steve Bass or anyone of you have any

experience with this new offering and could share an opinion or other

input on it, since it seems to be a worthy competitor.
