Safely Check Malware in a Sandbox

SunBelt Software, creators of CounterSpy, an anti-spyware program, recently released CWSandbox. It's a secure spot on their server that runs and analyzes executables. You upload a file -- malware, a virus, or even an ordinary program -- and CWSandbox sends you a report telling you what the program would do if you ran it on your system.

Before you get too excited, this is a technical program and the report that's generated has the potential to make you dizzy (it did me). Check the report I received when I sent MyWebSearch to the sandbox.

So here's my serious warning. If you don't know what you're doing, don't play around with malware programs or viruses just to test out the CWSandbox. Really. With that said, here's the CWSandbox link.

Dear Steve,

I do enjoy reading your tips and tricks but was dismayed to see our product being used as a "malware" example. MyWebSearch is not malware, spyware, adware, etc. It is a search toolbar platform that offers a number of free fun features such as world class Smileys, Cursors and much much more. For more info, please see: http://helpint.mywebsearch.com/intlinfo/help/notspyware.jhtml. If you would like to discuss it further, please feel free to email me at klawrence (at) iacsam (dot) com.

Sincerely,

Kirk, I used the term 'malware' in a very loose sense. Perhaps I should have said 'suspected malware' or 'unknown program' (or even 'potentially unwanted program'). Either way, I wasn't attempting to make the formal case that MyWebSearch is malware. Rather I was interested in generally characterizing the kinds of programs that one would typically submit to the sandbox.
