Preparing for the Big One

Posted by Steve Bass | Wednesday, August 30, 2006 8:47 AM PT

We have the usual stuff -- food, water, flashlights, meds -- as well as a checklist of relatives and emergency services. We also have a crank-powered radio.

If you don't have a kit, there are plenty of sites offering preparedness lists and procedures.

  • I found a great check list of things to do in a disaster from City of Berkeley.
  • The Alaska Sea Grant has help on preparing for an earthquake and ways to reduce damage.
  • In addition to the usual lists, the Earthquake Store has lists for dealing with pets, seniors, and physically challenged.
  • The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has details to help you prepare for the big one.

Tomorrow: The radio I've been searching for -- and finally found.

Hey Steve. How about moving to Canada. The worst things we have to deal with is 6 months of winter and 6 months of bad skating here in Ontario. It,s a lot easier to deal with that than waiting for your house to drop into the st andres fault? Bear.
