Video: DEA Agent Shoots Own Foot, Sues Agency

The guy is a knucklehead for shooting himself and then suing the agency. But you've gotta be impressed with his toughness and poise as he continues the lesson with a hole in him. The Smoking Gun has the story. [Hat tip to Paul C.]

The best line in the three-minute video (lower your PC's audio) comes from a student shouting something to the agent picking up an assault rifle. Listen for it at about 1:50 (watch the lower right corner of Windows Media Player for the timer).

Accidents happen at least this DEA Agent was trying to help some kids. It is a lot easier to sit on the sidelines of life and made negative comments then it is to attempt to do some good like this Agent was attempting

Your assessment of this individual's physical toughness and questionable acumen seems dead on. Ironically I wouldn't have seen the video or known this guy's name if he hadn't filed the lawsuit. Lee is an example of the depths to which we have sunk. He is part of a generation of homo sapiens that feels entitiled and yet does not take responsibility for their own actions. Perhaps the judge in this case can teach him a profound lesson; filing a frivolous lawsuit is expensive. I have a message to Lee Paige, "Keep the pistol holstered Barney", and your gun, your leg, your problem, deal with it. To the DEA, I have this message; fire this guy and get better agents.

Yeah, this guy is a real hero. He was trying really hard to help some kids who might want to learn how to shoot themselves. Yeah, it's fun to sit on the sidelines and watch idiots like this guy SHOOT HIMSELF WHILE DEMONSTRATING GUN SAFETY!

For god's sake, why would anyone defend this guy? Accidents happen, yes, but a gun safety demonstration should be based around an unusual level of caution, right? right.

This guy is unquestionably the dumbest former cop on the planet. I assume that he has been fired already. He would be kicked out of any NRA gun club in the western United States for that manuever. The question is, who hired this moron? That person should be fired also. There is no saving grace here.

This dea agent had credentials, whomever hired him has no reason to be fired. The agent/instructor should probably face charges and could be sued himself. Accidents do happen and people do make mistakes. Thankfully this agent didn't kill anyone with this accident or seriously injure himself. That being said, he must know it's simply time for him to find another line of work. There cannot be second chances when lives are put in jeopardy like that, so he needs to find something else to do to earn a living. If he wants to go on the ciircuit, he might try using this video clip instead of taking a loaded gun. wtf did he take a loaded gun into that environment? He's a jackass.

You have to be kidding me?! What kind of details do you need, it's on video tape! This has nothing to do with race - it has everything to do with being stupid. It is beyond comprehension to demostrate firearms safety while handling a loaded weapon in front of school children. Spare me the racist comment- you can be stupid no matter what color you are.

I think that Mr.Page is a very courageous man and I think that the people who were absent minded and let this tape get out on the web are idiots. These are suppose to be people who are looking to stop criminial mischief and they just began it. He stated that he was the most qualified man. He must have been the more qualified man to stand in front of those students even after shooting himself, he did not run and take care of his injuries, he made sure that everyone in the room was okay. He then pointed out how accidents like this can happen to any Human Being. An to those of you who call names and criticize people I bet your bloops were worse than his it just was not taped. So go back to your five and dime jobs, because he's going to be rich on this laugh. Ha Ha

A quote I found from a recent story: "Paige, 45, of Windermere, told NBC's "Today" show Friday he cleared the weapon but forgot to release the magazine."

Then he didn't clear the weapon, did he? He just replaced the round in the chamber with the next available round from the magazine!

What idiot "clears" the weapon with a loaded magazine in it? In a room full of kids!

This was no "gun accident" it was "gun negligence"... operator negligence. Saying that it was an accident is ignorant, and I'll show you why: Paige knowingly brought a loaded gun into the classroom. He knowingly took it from its holster. He knowingly cycled the slide without removing a loaded magazine (or at least he did it with reckless disregard of the consequences). He knowingly pulled the trigger of the gun, instead of placing it back into its holster in "ready condition." The gun would not have fired if these event did not happen... and none of them happened "accidentally." It is not like he forgot to take the loaded gun out of his training bag; or he did not know how a gun worked and pulled the trigger error.

IF anyone is to blame, it is Paige. If he wants to assign 1% of the blame to anyone else, it would be whoever "checked" to see if the gun was in fact empty - but that was still Paige's responsibility as the handler of the firearm.

Maybe, another 1% could be assigned to the idiot that approved Paige to carry a gun in the first place.

If Paige in fact has given dozens of these presentations, I guess we as a society should count ourselves lucky that he didn't injure or kill one of us!

And that person in the corner who "checked" to see if the chamber was cleared, watch the video again and note that Paige points the loaded gun in that direction and drops the slide, thus chambering the next round. So true irony was ALMOST served, had Paige pulled the trigger a moment sooner (gun pointed sideways, not down) he may have shot the person who checked that the gun was empty!

I think the school and those in attendance should sue the DEA for assigning such an idiot to this task, and risking all those students' lives... and Paige as well, for the other 99% of their emotional injuries.

As I was pulling back the hammer on my .38 snubnose (for the fifth time)and pointing it at the bathroom mirror while practicing my Dirty Harry "make my day" speech, my thumb slipped off the hammer and shot a hole through the mirror and out the other side! Fortunately, it was only a .38 and was stopped by a 2' 4" in the wall. I quickly spackled the hole and replaced the mirror before my wife got home and (of course) I never said a word. But at least I was STONED DRUNK at the time, which taught me to NEVER, EVER handle firearms while under the influence, and never play with guns unless you have a solid backstop.

This by far, is one of if not the dumbest lawsuits ever filed!!! Paige is supposed to be a professional that, one would/should, assume has had extensive firearms training. It is totally outrageous that he feels compelled to make money on what is clearly a criminal incident in which he is the accused party!! Discharging a firearm, in any environment, is unacceptable. To do so in a room full of children and adults is nothing short of a criminal act. Paige should be extremely lucky if he hasn't been fired and if several, if not all, of the people in that room don't file against him and the DEA. Paige needs to go. He is feeling pity for himself that he can't continue to be "the best" undercover DEA agent, ever. He is an arrogant, egotisticle moron.

I had a very similar experience many years ago as a youngster, fortunately there was no one around and most fortunately not on video! I had loaded and unloaded this rifle so many times just practising dry firing and this time I just happened to forget the correct order, with the magazine in I closed the bolt and and then took the magazine out! Luckily it was pointed in a safe direction when it went off.

A very valuable lesson learned, one that is permanently etched in my mind.

I'm willing to bet this is exactly how soldiers accidently kill themselves too when cleaning their firearms... why it was pointed towards them though I'll never know.

People like Sherry will soon render the term "racist" meaningless. Every time the race card is righteously trotted out to defend or accuse in situations where race is clearly not a factor, it is diminished. If you have no valid factual argument, you should just keep your mouth shut.

Why was a federal agent in a room full of kids with a loaded weapon? Unbelievable!

Does the US Government promote this kind of stupidity, or was he acting alone?

We've got it all here; stupidity, arrogance, law suits and engrained victim mentality. The racism card was even thrown in, which was great to see. Everything America stands for. This guy should be your next president! It would actually be funny if his IQ wasn't so close to Bush's.....
God bless America......

What I wanna know is why is he playing around with the trigger when in any basic training about firearms you are taught to treat each gun as if it is loaded. I give credit for keeping the gun pointed in a safe direction during the misfire but his finger should have never been even close to that trigger at all. And another thing why wasnt the safty ON when he was deminstrating. They make those things for a reason to prevent accidents like this when you forget somthing of that magnitude. As far as I see it this guy has failed the basics of gun safety and should have never been in a posistion to teach it.

In Australia, we have outlawed hand guns. Why do you need a hand gun? To defend yourself against someone else with a hand gun??? If all hand guns were banned, would you need a DEA official to bring a loaded hand gun into a classroom to show the kids proper firearm safety????? And who is the fool who suggested that skin colour has anything to do with an idiot shooting himself whilst demonstrating firearm safety. A fool is a fool no matter what their heritage. Now, lets talk about lawsuits. We have unfortunately followed the lead from the good old US of A and now everyone is suing each other. What this has meant is that noone is prepared to take responsibility for their own actions, and now the insurance companies have jumped on the bandwagon, and lifted premiums to the point where the kids can't take part in many things that we enjoyed as children. For heavens sake, when you behave like an idiot, stand up and accept that it was your own bloody fault. God bless America

The nature of many of these comments is evidence that we’re losing something most Americans once had, an understanding of COMMON SENSE gun safety. I'd seen enough BEFORE the gun went off to KNOW that this arrogant braggart has NO BUSINESS wearing a badge.
Unlike yesterday when most homes had a gun on premises & kids learned safety along with the three "R's", today I'd say 50% of everyone I know has never fired a gun.
Catholic girls’ parents keep them completely in the dark about sex, telling them only of its evil nature. As a result, when they INEVITABLY are exposed to it, they often make reckless decisions.
The liberal fringe has done the same thing with guns. Guns represent INDIVIDUAL POWER (good or bad). That scares the commies whose reliance on Big Brother to tell them how to act & think is central to their survival.
Those of us not viewing the world through commie colored glasses knew this guy was a bad egg BEFORE that gun went off. Yet some of you extol his virtues even AFTER. You are the sad wretched refuse of this culture!

Stephen,

When you figure out how to get rid of guns .. REALLY get rid of them .. you let me know and I'll give you mine. Until then, the fact that you Aussies recently handed over your firearm freedoms is a sad testament to the eroding individualist nature of the Aussie people.
Only the future will tell if my fears are accurate, but I believe that this concept that we neither need nor deserve handguns is part of a larger leftist concept that is handing over our grandeur to the tyranny of the lowest common denominator and we'll live to regret each of the freedoms and virtues that we gave away.

I would never give my gun up, but seriously, name one good thing guns have done for humans other then popullation control. On a side note, what do you expect from a DEA Snitch, he befriends people then stabs them in the back for a living, what makes you think he gives a shit about anyone but himself. I am glad this jackoff is being ridiculed, and the fact of him being black and being part of a group that oppresses black people means he abandoned his race when he picked up a badge.

This guy has a legitmitate lawsuit. Had nobody released this video and violated his right to privacy, his stellar record of a career and decorated service would have overshadowed this unfortunate accident. All because of one incident that none of us should have seen and only for 15 minutes of fame for our viewing pleasure, this man's career is over. What a shame. I hope he gets MILLIONS!
