I just caught a video promoting Spore, a cool Sim-type game -- and one I can't wait to try. The release is set for fall 2006.
You can watch the author, Will Wright, demonstrate the game in a 36-minute presentation on Google Video. Better, though, is the full presentation, about an hour long, which includes an introduction by the author and other game details. This is the game that I have been looking forward to since I heard about it last year on the SimCity.com bbs.
I don't buy many games because lately the mojority of them seem to be just about blowing things up and hurting people. I have been a long time fan of Simcity and city building god games and this looks like it will include the best parts of Simcity and the Sims. Plus the way that the game includes the stuff created by others playing the game is great.
If you are into Sim City, you will definately dig this game. I watched the 36 minute Google video the other day and it was cool the way you could manipulate just about all areas of the game and see what develops. You are able to edit the characters, the terrain and other areas. You can let you creative side run wild in this game! And as Thom D pointed out, you can use things that others created! Check out the video and see.
Also one cool game to try is Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
Thom, have you actually watched the trailer? Theres quite alot of blowing up, and hurting creatures in the game! Will Wright even confesses he's about to lose his reputation as a non-violent game designer!
This is quite possibly the best game yet. I'm into God-Games... I'm into every Genre that the video promises Spore explores... But I am most interested in the Creature Designing Stage... Wow. Wow...
It's the Procedural Generation which is spectacular though... Everyone, you'd benefit from looking it up on Wikipedia...
