TimeSnapper grabs screen captures of whatever you do on the PC every five seconds. You can play it back a screen at a time, or watch it as a movie.
Okay, now don't get excited. I know this sounds like a sort of keylogger. Or a big brother program. But I think it's a hoot to see what I've been doing all day on the PC.
Sure the novelty will wear off, but at the same time, I'm wondering about turning it over to IFC or Atomfilms as a kind of Life in the Day of Bass indie film.
Be aware, though, that the images can add up and fill up a folder in no time (especially on dual-monitor systems). In Options, I changed the setting to watch only the active application and to purge the archive every two weeks.
TimeSnapper's free, small (80K) and definitely cool. (Thanks to Jared, a frequent Comments contributor, for this nifty lead.)
Wow, this works well with .NET 2.0 - no problems so far. Sure best to customize immediately for size and quality if HD space is a concern.
Leo: It's true -- this puppy can fill up a drive faster than an installation of Office. But it sure is fun seeing a record of how I'm frittering away the day...
Thanks for the mention, Steve! Just fyi, you can turn the settings way down on the application so that it won't use up all the disk space. I have two 1600x1200 monitors (3200x1200), use GIF at 60% every 60 seconds, and have 31 days archived--which comes to 2.7gb. If I had a more standard resolution then one would most likely only use 1.5gb or fewer for a full month. I use the application all day, but fortunately when I'm not around it doesn't do any capturing. I have no complaints and it's proven very helpful when a form I was filling out timed-out and I almost lost my prose...
