It's set to explode on Friday, and it goes by many names, including Kama Sutra worm, Blackmal-E, Nyxem-D worm. Of course the media (hey, that's me!) is going hog wild warning you about it.
Stop Worrying
If you update your virus program signatures regularly, and do a weekly AV scan, I don't think you have much to worry about. But I know some of you are worry warts (and some of you don't use an AV program), so if you're concerned, here are a couple of options:
1. Download and run Symantec's free removal tool. If it does detect the worm, follow the instructions on the removal tool page.
2. Some of you may not have an AV program, or more likely, ignore the daily pop-up alert from Symantec asking you to renew your license. Read my blog Need Anti-virus Software? Try One of These to get a free one. Or use Trend Micro's free online HouseCall AV scan.
BTW, if you're curious, PC World just did a review of AV programs in "The New Virus Fighters: Today's antivirus programs have no trouble stopping familiar intruders, but how safe are you from the unknown? Our tests of ten contenders reveal a new Best Buy."
More Troubleshooting Next Week
I promised a few more troubleshooting and diagnostic tools today and tomorrow. I lied. Watch for them next week.
thanks for the info, but I am smarter than the average bear and was way ahead of the game !
My friend is paranoid and isn't even going to have his ETHERNET cord connected tomorrow -_-...
just switched to a Mac...no problem
Get a Mac!
how long this virous is going to last?
Don't Use Microsoft Windows.
Use Linux or a Mac.
Macs are running a UNIX derivative based OS now, so they are not now, nor have they ever been, virus proof. No OS is completely safe. Since Apple’s share a far smaller portion of the total market, they make a less inviting target. If the Mac world was the size of the MS world, you would see more viruses, plain and simple.
Via Ubuntu!
It is a low level warning for this worm, I am not worried. I never open forwarded emails, or open any attached files unless I am expecting them or speak to the person who sent them to me.
From what I have read about this worm, it can only be activated from an email in an attached file that has porn mentioned in the subject line or body of the email. Since I have more important things to do than look at porn online, I have no worries.Rest assured, there will be many folks out there who just can't resist porn.
raises hand!
is this virus fake
Do you think it happens when the subject says "From A computer that hates your computer"
Well I couldn't resist seeing which computer hated mines, so I opened it and the window closed :]
hope my mcafee works good
linux all the way....quack
The fact remains, there are TENS of THOUSANDS of viruses for Windows. There are NONE for Mac OS X. And the jabbering about Apple's low market share is just so off the mark. Unless you run your machine as Root (disabled out of the box), there is no way any mythical virus could hurt it.
Go Mac. You'll never go back. :)
M
Thanks for the info on the worm.. I think anyone without anti-virus is crazy and should be running it.
On the Mac notes - ROFL! Every few posts I've read for years usually contains something like, "I just got a Mac, no problem". Apple, a business based on brainwashing people into believing thier computer is better.. And it's more rare, so you have to think "DIFFERENT" to appreciate it. The Apple ads are funny though. Especially the one that puts down Intel chips years back.. But now Apple needs to use an Intel chip.. Apple lovers, please understand.. It's only marketing.. OMG... so funny!
Better not to open emails from unknown receipent, subjects & attachement. We will be safe.
Check you main mail server before it get download to internal server for spam & Junk mails

The biggest problem is that there are so many PC users out there who have not been properly trained on web and email best practices. It's not just newbies, either.
Now it's time to rant:
Why is it that some Mac-heads feel compelled to post on boards that discuss viruses that don't apply to their OS? Nobody expects (or wants) them here, but they crash the party anyway and never shut their traps. Your comments are not helping, so keep 'em to yourself. The only thing that makes sense is that they are all nine years old and are bragging about their computers.
I designed a patch to fix the virus. I'm a hard core programmer that created a program that turns your computer off forever. It's the ultimate anti-virus program:)
Switched to Solaris 10 x86 on my laptop and no longer have to worry about this stuff!
This is an office computer. I'm opening everything I can on it,especially any type of email attachment. I always disable virus protection to boot. It blocks sites that I just love to frequent, and since the virus libraries are soooo bloated from all the clap that infects computers, I think it actully compromises my system performance. I know for a fact this computer has a ton of trojans and malware on it, but I don't care. Surf DIRTY!!! Yeah, it RULES!
@Mac Users: First off, get over yourselves. The MacOS isn’t perfect, has never been perfect, and never will be perfect. The only people that fall for Macs are the ones who are too gullible to resist the marketing scheme that Apple lays out. I was especially pissed by the by post containing the comparison between the amount of viruses found for Macs and PCs. You can't (and shouldn't) even try to compare the two, the MacOS is *nix based, wheras Windows uses a proprietary kernel. I personally wouldn't run anything other than FreeBSD on my desktop system. Unix just isn't a target for hackers. Why would they attack their own OS?
@Windows Users: Yeah, get an anti-virus program, don’t open attachments, etc. Whatever; I don’t do any of that, and none of my Windows systems have ever gotten infected. How do I do it? A good router, and restrictive access control lists. I block all traffic that I don’t need, and that’s about it. The best solution is to not expose yourself to the world.
reply to joshmk,
totally agree with you, if you use common sense and dont be an idiot then you will be fine. If you are panicing, well get lost, disconnect from the internet. just use your brian and advice given to ya
Chris,
What is a Brian?
Way to go Skippy. I couldn't of said it better myself.
Why is there always a battle of PC vs Mac?! Get both. And bob, yeah, the virus is fake (said sarcastically). By the way, why do all you people make it sound like we HAVE to get an alternative OS. Is it life and death or something?
Hey, Macheads, you have your own share of viruses. Your not completely virus-proof. You should be running antivirus, too.
Yeah, it's like the PHP vs. ASP vs. JSP thing, or the Flash vs. Javascript, it isn't one or the other, you _could_ use all of the choices, but why waste your time.
