SnagIt -- The $40 Screen Capture Winner

I do so many screen captures, I need an industrial strength product. (I did hundreds of screens for use in my book, PC Annoyances, which gives me a chance to ask you to check it out.)

SnagIt provides dozens of ways to grab screens -- actually, unlimited ways. Each method can be saved as a profile and assigned to a hotkey. For instance, one of my profiles does a simple capture of any area I highlight with SnagIt. But I have profiles for other situations:

Saving a region as a file, in practically any file format.

Grabbing an area with a freehand tool and sending it to the clipboard; this is great for portions of a photo.

Capturing multiple areas at once or recording a portion of the screen and saving it as an AVI video.

I can also add notes -- including text, arrows, or other items -- to the screen capture.

Once you've tried out the freebies I mentioned on last Friday, grab a trial copy of SnagIt to test out.

This is a very pricey program, There are a number of freeware alternatives that perform many, if not all, of these functions. For example, I use the donationware program FastStone Capture. Try it out, Steve, and allow others to save some $$.

Use the "print screen" option to copy the whole page into memory then paste it into your favorite graphics program (which you would use anyway after using snagit). I just don't like the idea of having too many programs in my PC that does basically the SAME things. Also, you save precious dollars.

I use quick screenshot maker (including free screen capture software) to add annotations to the screen capture images.

Although each of you make good points, only SnagIt can do it all - freehand, web, scrolling pages, etc. The other option are limited in comparison.
