The Bass Blog

I’ve been looking forward to starting this blog. It means I finally get to talk to you on a daily basis. I see it as a direct link to you, so if something strikes me, or I pick up some useful info, I can fire it off to you in a flash.

For instance, you may have heard about the “Bill Gates Goes to College” video starring Bill and Napoleon Dynamite. It was shown at the Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles two weeks ago and parts of it are pretty funny. You can view it at Paul Thurrott’s SuperSite. (Scroll down to Video content.)

The other exciting part of doing the blog is it’s interactive. Sort of. You have a way to immediately respond, right on the blog page, and, if you’re not complimentary, as with e-mail, I get to ignore you.

Hey, wait, you might not know who I am. I’m Steve Bass and I’ve been writing for PC World since the late 80s. You can catch my Hassle-Free PC column each month and read my weekly Tips and Tweaks newsletter.

Inside the Bass Blog

My plan is to supply you with quick takes — tips, tricks, and tweaks, for sure, but also funny videos and images, weird sites, time-killing games, and as-it-happens computing news. I’ll also have a better way to respond to your pithy questions.

It’ll be just like the newsletter, only it’ll get to you lots more quickly. And every weekday.

Blogs and RSS feeds

If you’re reading this online, that’s okay. But you’re missing the pleasure of a blog — having it delivered to your virtual door. It’ll take you about 15 minutes of not-too-difficult futzing to set up an RSS feed using any number of free tools. You can read how to do it in my Tips & Tweaks newsletter; then read our handy tutorial, RSS--Get the News and Information You Choose to get you up to speed.

One other blog you may want to subscribe to is Harry’s Techlog. Harry is Harry McCracken, PC World’s Editor in Chief. Brown nosing aside, Harry writes a blog that’s one of the best around. For instance, I spotted the news about Google’s Wi-Fi beta and he scooped me and my week-old newsletter. Now I finally have a chance to turn the tables on him.

BTW, while you’re fiddling around with blogs, take a look at all of our RSS feeds. And leave it to Google to cook up Blog Search, a way to scour the Internet universe for just the blog you want. (You’ll probably find my mother’s blog in your search; don’t feel any obligation, okay?)

If you subscribe to the newsletter, you’ll still receive it, each and every Wednesday. (Oh, geez, you’re not a subscriber? Sign up for it in seconds — look for signup at lower right corner of the page.)

I'm getting older (70) AND better thanks to you.
I got my first PC in '97 and taught myself how to use it...then I gathered courage, went online, and (with your help) learned how to enjoy it! Computing has been my hobby ever since and I thank you sincerely!

Ramon G. McLeod? Is this left over from your Witness Relocation Program days?

Love your emails, usually click on every link you send to see what's up.
Wish you'd start a "Where to Find" blog or link.
Your articles and PC World are always full of useful info that I count on.

Thanks

Now that your not writing Tips and Tweeks Weekly Newsletter anymore, you should have time to resurrect PIBMUG?

Some of us in Pasadena miss it (you)!

I am gathering that this is the first day for your blog is that correct? I have faithfully read your articles and e-mails for quite a long time and you usually have something to offer. I am also glad that you spend time reading what we have to say. Thus it is a two-way street.

Dang, Steve, I'm sure gonna miss those e-mails! May take me a day or two to RDFM on this Pluck thingie. If I ever figure out how to get your RSS feed working, I'll get up the courage to reset the flashing clock on my old VCR. For the record, you do amazing work. Thank you!

Hey, I'm with Pete Klein - resurrect PIBMUG!. If that's not practical (and I suspect that it isn't), what about a series of "reunion shows"? If the Brady Bunch can do it, surely a few hundred of your closets friends can help you pull it off! I won't even complain if there are no raffle giveaways :)

Seriously, we DO miss you Steve.

Hi Steve,
I concur with most; read you for ages, dig your help....blah blah blah...
My only problem is you big city broadband folk forgetting us little ol' dialups. Damn, I'd love to be able watch some of the cute movies and stuff, but it's just not feasible. Keep us lower forms of life in mind, please! And please TELL us that when the suggested websites just aren't dialup friendly. It would make our lives much less stressful. Thank you.

Steve, thanks for all the great hints an tips, and for the homeworking mails you used to send. I moved to telecommuting some years ago and your emails contained the info I needed to become self suficient and more productive. Long may your fun and informative insights continue in this transition.
