Should Windows XP Be Saved? Take Our Survey

Microsoft is planning to discontinue most sales of Windows XP on January 30th--effectively ensuring that just about any Windows machine you buy from July 1st onwards will run Vista, whether you want it to or not.

Lots of folks would prefer to maintain the XP option. And our colleagues at InfoWorld have set up a clever site called SaveXP.com to serve as a gathering place for XP supporters. It's got a save-XP petition which more than 70,000 folks have signed, articles, podcasts, links, and a lot more.

Head over there to check it out and, if you so choose, put your name on the petition. Or take our little survey on XP and its fate--I'll report back on the results once a quorum of folks have voted...

who cares, I still vista more.
media center, DX-10, aero, tabs on windows explorer (not internet), etc make it way better.

no it's not. it's a bag of bloat. saying you like vista is like saying you like bloat. for bloat is the stuff that wears down efficiency at a minimal benefit, perceived or not.

Vista is bloated. I've used it. The Ultimate version... well, you've gotta be kidding me. I know that the developers could've cut down on the code-bloat. Why they didn't, is beyond me.

I am a kind of person who is easily impressed by shiny things and glassy effects. That is why I like Vista. I dont mind that it runs a little slow.

All I can say is that if Microsoft wants to stop selling XP, they have no right to complain when the number of pirated copies explodes. Maybe when Vista STILL doesn't sell, they'll see the folly of their ways. As a disclaimer, I have never used pirated software (OS or otherwise) in any of my machines, however I don't think I'm alone in saying if you don't want to sell what I want, don't cry when I get it from someone other than Microsoft!!!
P.S. If Microsoft follows through on this, I also don't think I'll be alone in no longer having ANY sympathy for "lost sales due to piracy." You had the best selling software ever and YOU chose to stop selling it!

I for one like Vista, but should they stop selling XP? No, I don't think people will ever stop using XP unless Microsoft breaks through with Vista somehow or maybe Windows 7 will be alot better but thats still a while away. I'll use either OS though.

We should always look forward... especially in this industry. Having said that, Vista does not offer something significantly better than XP and that is way most people are indiferrent to it. MS should have never released Vista 32bit. The real advance for the OS is the 64bit version as it can make the newest processors (and those that aren't so new but work at 64bit anyway) run really faster. Microsoft didn't give a product that is clearly better than its predecessor...Saving XP though would be a step in the wrong direction. We should campaign for a quicker transition to 64bit computing. Leopard did it. Why not us PC users?

No, that would be poor business. You have a new product you stop selling the old one. (Of course you still support it for a while.) In addition, you want 3rd parties to create Vista compatible software, don't make it harder on them buy offering 2 operating systems. Plus keep selling XP and you have to extend your support time, taking away resources from Vista support. But, do not release a new OS until it is ready for prime time!

Yes, and I only say that because I like Vista less than XP. The last os I was agreeable to was 98. I use my system for web browsing and personal file and imaging editing. XP and Vista are both too bloated for my tastes. I have no use for many of the Services, nor for the included app's, fonts, sounds, cursors, wallpapers, screensavers, etc., etc. I also have no use for an os that refuses to let me delete system files like "Windows Movie Maker" when there is no such app installed. For the price, I should be allowed more customization.

Save XP? ABSOLUTELY! It's a TERRIFIC OS. I'll NEVER switch to Vista. If I ever get a new computer with Vista installed, and I MIGHT at some point, I'll just delete Vista and use my XP OS installation CD to install XP, or, I'll install XP and just ignore Vista. Why MS felt it needed to come out with a new OS is beyond me. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, and XP wasn't /isn't broke! Oh, wait a minute, I know why Microsoft came out with Vista, because it wanted to make another gazillion dollars, THAT'S why! At least that's the only reason I can come up with. SHEESH!

after a quite volatile initial relationship with XP, we who use it, finally have it working great & running all our software ..........it was quite an ordeal at first & i remember the win98 purists, & the vitriole & the hubbub with drivers & hardware & i have to wonder why anyone would want to go through that all again...............microsoft could have simply improved XP in whatever areas it could & we would all have accepted that......................XP is clearly the better software; it is easier to use, one can make it look just like vista, all the drivers & hardware run flawlessly, microsoft would really show just how out of touch they have become by ending XP's reign...........i really can't understand it; other than to say, i understand greed & meglomania..........thank you for allowing us to vent on this platform......................God bless PC World & all the other true journalists in the various fields of technology reporting.

There are enough ghost copies out there to keep it going for a long time . . I have installed a few of them and warn people about the M$ crap called "VISTA" and all the problems it has caused . .

I have Windows Vista Home Premium on my new laptop, and XP Home on my PC. Although I like the shinyness of Vista, I must say that Windows XP is more user friendly, and it does not break any of my applications like Windows Vista does. I say long live Windows XP. I am thinking of "upgrading", thats right, I said "upgrading" my laptops OS to Windows XP. Its more stable than Vista is.

I believe XP should be kept alive. My son recently recieved a laptop for Christmas. Of course Vista is the OS. I like the look and really like the tab system instead of opening muliple pages. His sysem has a 2G prossesor to which I assumed would load up web pages fast. It dosen't!!! In fact, I have a desktop with a little 850Mhz prossesor, to which I upgraded to XP from WinME, and I can load up multiple web pages faster than his one page. We will be upgrading our home PC in the near future and I WILL be "Upgrading" the Vile-Vista which will ultimately come with it to my trusty XP!!!!

Microsoft's decision to stop selling XP had caused our company to focus on Linux based software. We currently use two programs that are integral to our company that will NOT run on Vista, and the cost to upgrade those programs to Vista would cost us more than $20,000.00. Microsoft doesn't care that in addition to the cost of upgrading operating systems, businesses like ours also have to pay to upgrade our other software every time Microsoft wants another infusion of cash.

I upgraded my Dell 8400 from XP Pro to Vista Home Premium Feb 1, 2007 but reverted back to XP after a year due to numerous issues . A list of items that lead me to revert back to XP:
1) A Maxtor II external backup drive stopped working. I was never able to retrieve the backup data.
2) DVD option on WMP11 stopped working
3) After increasing ram from 2 GB to 4 GB and running a Reg Utility in an attempt to fix WMP11, I was told my Vista Operating system was no longer genuine, booting up to windows in reduced operating mode. All attempts suggested to correct failed. I thus decided to reformat my C partition and do a clean install of XP. I couldn't be happier. I truly believe that Vista is the next WIN ME and would be very problematic for businesses thinking about upgrading. I pride myself on my ability to troubleshoot and correct hardware/software issues however numerous Vista bugs and ongoing conflicts or error msgs convinced me that for now XP is by far better and less problematic.

I think Xp Pro should still be produced/supported. It works, most IT know it better than Vista and software/hardware issues are small.

Vista is just another way to haul in additional funds on the backs of people who don't know everything they do with software is rented/temporary/not owned and to keep "alive" they need to spend another $300 and then another $300 when Windows 7 comes. Windows 2000 Pro and XP Pro work and use less resources...Vista needs a dual core and at least 1024 memory just to boot up which is insane.

Microsoft just needs to sell a new operating system to fill its coffers and get users to buy newer computers. There is no need for a new version of Windows, and the new computers aren't that much faster than what we've got now, especially running Vista. There are banks that are still using Windows 2000, and they're not going to upgrade to Vista if it's full of quirks. Most banks, and other companies probably, don't upgrade to the newest system as soon as it comes out. It's too risky for them.

Win XP is highly inferior to XP:
1- It is slower, even if unnecessary services are removed.
2- Less User friendly.
3- Bloated.
4- Incompatible with a lot of hardware.

Since Microsquish has the majority of the market, removing XP should be illegal, since they will force users to switch at some point. They have control of the OS business and are using it to control the world. Next computer-A MAC.

I would have to agree with B.A.Miron and some of you others about XP I have XP on my new system that I bought and also had XP on my old system when I had to upgrade from windows 98 I like XP and also the place I bought my system told me that people that come in and get a new system want XP cause they don't like the new vista and also I have heard that vista does not work with people that have dial up internet and they were having problems with it and the place I got my system every time they get a used system with XP on it they can't keep them in stock this is a place that also repairs computers and sells them
until Microsoft can get all the bugs out of vista I won't change cause right now vista sucks and I think that some of the old software that people have works good on XP and that they will have problem if they upgrade to vista

Windows 2000 was the best operating system Microsoft has ever released. If it had gotten ANY support, XP would have been in the same position that Vista is now. That being said, XP finally works most of the time and now they are trying to force another bloated, buggy, not ready for release operating system on us. I think my next computer will be ordered/built without an operating system and I'll go back to Linux, now that it supports just about any hardware you could want.

The decision to upgrade is simple - does the upgrade offer value commensurate to the cost. In my case with Vista: ABSOLUTELY NOT! There's not one thing I see in Vista that I can't do now (which includes HDTV recording, viewing and video editing), and having to upgrade software and possibly a piece or two of hardware makes no sense. As for Aero, ATI has had Hydrovision for years which does much the same things as Aero. The vendors also push Microsoft for upgrades that force people to buy new hardware - it's part of the game. We have reached a point where hadware even 3 or 4 years old suffices for most home users that don't stress their equipment. There are many that can't afford to play the upgrade game: seniors, young families with children, lower income families. Part of the hardware upgrade game is that Microsoft gouges the home user for software if they upgrade without buying new hardware and puts a financial burden on small businesses that really don't need Vista either. As everyone becomes more computer literate and Linux continues to evolve, Microsoft will have to finally pay attention to the consumer (just as AOL found out).

I have several computers running XP and yesterday I update with SP3 RC, but I have only one computer quad 6600 running with Vista. I never had so bad experience with a OS like that. Last Sunday I downgrade to XP 64BIT, I am in heaven. Please MS keep XP for at least 2010 when you will realize the Vista replacement

Where does Microsoft get off? They force Vista down everyones throats and then I have to read about them making record profits. I recently bought a new desktop pc and spent almost a week getting XP to run properly on it.(it came with Vista) What happened to the days when I got a windows 2000 and XP disc to choose the one I wanted to use. Bill Gates you have created a monster! I WILL try Linux!

Now when microsoft had an OS good enough like XP, they decide to replace it, for an OS like VISTA that don't work like XP do. If microsoft decide to discontinue XP, the next computer I will buy it will be a MAC.
I'm pretty sure many people are thinking like me.
MICROSOFT, READ THIS!!!. AND PAY ATTENTION
Now I have a XP pc, and I will continue using it until I can, if XP is no longer available, the next computer I buy it will be a MAC.
Microsoft are you happy with this decision?
I fight for my right to choose, and because microsoft is forcing us to buy a VISTA OS after June, I still have the option to switch to a MAC. and I will use that right.
MICROSOFT, wanna keep your customer? keep XP.
THINK, how much will you lose in $$$$$ ( is the only language you understand) because your stubborness

Hello all !

To summarize the vista issue in as less time as possible; Dont go near it ! I use XP on my work laptop and the OS runs without issue.
Vista on the other hand is a pile of OS junk that came off the assembly line partially assembled. Bill Gates, you bad boy......
On my home systems all this is a non issue, have been using Macs since 1989 and have never looked back. So, long live XP
on the work machine, may the Gods of the OS grant it a reprieve.
On the other hand Vista should be shipped straight to the furnace for final disposal. The fascist dictators in the Republic of Microsoftia should stop using the computing world as their oyster and mess up a great XP world with such a rotten OS as Vista.
Personally I call it Shista. If Microsoft keeps up this trend with Windows 7, well us mac owners would be glad to offer a sales pitch of a lifetime with blissfull computing. or maybe the folks at Linux will welcome you all with open arms.

Hi..
I used to hate vista... now i like it.. i tweaked it so much that it runs as well as XP and the superfetch just helps the matter of speed... by turning off services, take some visuals off, turning off start-ups, fine tuning the pagefile... and i have 1.5gb of ram and an AMD single core processor and im happy with vista... but i also have XP dual booted... so i can run either when i need them... iv had XP for 3 years since i got this computer and i really do love it... i think microsfot would make a big mistake stop seling XP there sales will go down in huge numbers and people will leave vista and xp for mac or linux because a lot of people dont know or want to make vista usable... (if you want to make vista as fast as xp its very easy just search the web) so yeah i like xp but vista is acceptible but i dont like the thought of loosing XP
