As you may have heard, our sister publication InfoWorld ended its almost thirty-year run in print last month to focus entirely on making InfoWorld.com as timely and useful as it can possibly be. It was a logical move for them, and I'm sure they won't be the only well-known dead-tree publication to do so in the months and years to come. (VITAL NOTE: PC World's print edition is doing just fine, thank you--it's going to be around for a long time to come.)
It's no shock that our InfoWorld colleagues have heard from lots of folks who like paper and who miss InfoWorld's pulpy, portable version. So Steve Fox, InfoWorld's editor-in-chief, and his team came up with something pretty clever: InfoWorld Express, a free weekly PDF containing some of the site's best articles. Paper lovers get an InfoWorld they can print out; InfoWorld doesn't have to print and distribute a few hundred thousand magazines.
Like I say, PC World magazine isn't going anywhere. But we're wondering: If we started publishing a PC World Express--a free weekly downloadable PDF filled with content from our site--might it find an audience, too? (At PCW, we don't really care how you use PCW--just as long as you do use us in some form, be it print, Web, e-mail, RSS...or maybe even PDF.)
If you've got an opinion on this question--favorable or unfavorable--you'll be doing us a favor if you take this quick poll:
I'm rather new to PC World online, but I really enjoy it.
If it had no advertising I would think it worth while, otherwise I wouldn't waste MY ink or paper on it.
While the idea of a PDF could be of good use, I still prefer the "dead-tree" version of PC World I currently receive.
'Nother "Yes, if..." vote. Content, yes. With ads, no.
great! ...still learning from you guys. don't care about add
Excellent idea! Then, I can save all my PCWorld's on a DVD rather than a stack on the floor.
