Which PC World Cover Would You Buy?

Posted by Harry McCracken | Monday, July 24, 2006 11:02 PM PT

Last month, I discussed the cover research we do to see what types od designs might be most appealing on the newsstand, and--after we'd already conducted our official survey--I asked readers of this blog to chime in. Lots of you did. So let's try this again.

Here's a cover design we'll call "Cover A"...

And this one, let's call "Cover B"...

I voted A, but I'm pretty sure I'd buy neither at a store. The amount of text crammed into small spaces in magazines just makes for horrid reading compared to something online with a lot of whitespace. Perhaps you should sell an online version =p

I voted A, the keys look a bit more modern.

Cover A has better use of white space making the headline more attractive.

Cover A. Lots of nice, clean white space and little clutter. Cover B has too much eye candy, not unlike some of the less popular Office releases, I might add.

Funny thing, I barely noticed the keys and, until reading the comment above, I didn't notice the graphic on cover B at all!

I think with years of web browsing experience, I have trained my eyes to ignore graphics (which tend to be advertising boxes) and focus on what appears to be the main text of a page. So, as I looked back and forth between cover A and B, all that I really noticed was the difference in the main text, "72 Ways..."

I can't say why, but my gut says, "Go with A".

Neither when most of the magazine is available free online...

I liked the keys idea, but too small. Cover B is better because the Firefox logo is bigger, but if by putting a giant Firefox logo with "Firefox" on the cover is possible, then I'd just buy the magazine and tear of the cover.

Haha, looks like the results are 50/50 right now. That might say something. I think you should go for cover C... you do have a C don't you? :)

Cover B, keys are so cliched in terms of "unlocking"

The magazine is getting so thin that a redesign of the cover should refer to the inside as a pamphlet.

Cover A: it's cleaner and easier on the eyes.

Unlike the last cover poll, I don't strongly favour either.
I like the text on A and the graphic on B.

I slightly favour B overall.

I vote Cover C too. Both A and B looks terrible. C is definitely the choice.

I don't like either cover. Nothing really grabs you on cover {b}. "72 ways"...so what! Cover {a}, keys to something hidden;blah,blah...boring. I would pass on both covers, if seen at a local store. Need better (tech candy) on the cover and a few "top notch" teaser messages. They both look like the same old cover from pc world gain.....blah!
I guess its the reviews that sell, not the cover...right?

No offense, but cover A sort of makes me laugh. It just looks funny. I think cover B is better, however I think there's a little too much white space.

Many, Many products are impulse purchased. The factor that caught my eye firsthand was the keys on cover 'A' which implies open.
Of course the layout is a primary factor also, change the placement of the keys along with coloration and other content and everythjing becomes unbalanced.
Anyway, you have the years of experience behind you versus our impulse opinion in less then one thousand characters so your still the boss.

Cover b. Not as much white space, but it grabs my attention much more.

I don't read PC World b/c it is a "professional" magazine (say like forbes or WSJ or even pc mag) I read PC World because they cover lots of products and offer lots of pizazz.

Both are terrible. Why do magazines cook up silly numbers for their covers?

Just delete "72 ways to"

Heaven forbid that you should have a joke.

To get new customers that dont know much about computers, I would say A with help in marketing for mew customers. B would be for us old dogs and we already know what you are trying to say...go get the market..good job on the web site..
