Is Google Promoting Firefox Today?

Spread Firefox, John Battelle's Searchblog, and other sites are reporting that if you're in the U.S. and using Internet Explorer, Google is promoting Firefox on its home page--specifically, the version of Firefox which comes with the Google Toolbar preinstalled. Here's a cropped image:

googfire.jpg

This is a sort of kindler, gentler version of the Explorer Destroyer campaign, which also involves sites detecting when someone's using IE--but in that case, the user gets a hectoring message that he or she should be using Firefox...and is sometimes denied access to the site.

The Google promo is quite a coup for Firefox--the Google homepage is probably the single most valuable piece of real estate on the Internet, and the company has been loathe to add stuff to it. But it's not, of course, merely a charitable act to increase usage of an excellent product. Every copy of a browser with the Google Toolbar that's out there results in more searches that Google can monetize with advertising.

It'll be fascinating to see if a meaningful percentage of the millions of people who may see the message do indeed try Firefox and stick with it. (At PCWorld.com, by the way, its share remains stable--about 20 percent of visits to our site are via Firefox.)

But...

At the moment, nobody here at PC World is getting the Firefox promo on the Google homepage. (Some of us did see it earlier today, but not me; I stole the above screen from Spread Firefox.) Our IDG News colleagues are working on a story on all this, but for the moment, we don't know whether A) some IE users in the U.S. but not all of them are getting the Firefox promo, or B) Google has taken down it down altogether (and if the latter, why).

So here's a small favor you can do us if you're so inclined: If you're in the U.S. and use IE, could you check to see whether the Google homepage is telling you about Firefox right now, and leave a comment reporting what you found? (Update! Judging from the response so far, looks like the Firefox promo isn't there at the moment. Thanks to all who took a moment to report in on this.)

I use Google desktop and so the Google homepage has NO promotion of firefox. I am also a IE 7 beta user. This IE comes with a Google bar installed. Very happy with the beta.

No mention of Firefox on Google's home page using IE of FF. However, on the Toolbar page, using IE a link at the bottom informs "FireFox version now available." There is no corresponding link to IE version when using FF to access Toolbar page.

I did not see it with IE6 on a pc without firefox installed but with the google desktop and the google browser tool bar installed.

HOWEVER, when trying with another PC with IE7 and Firefox installed I've got something else: a box in the upper right corner that reads "Make Google your search engine in Internet Explorer" with a button.

So, obviously Google is checking what browser is installed but also if you can access their search engine. It's more than promoting Firefox, it's promoting their search engine against MSN.

UberTech

No thanks. Opera takes longer than Firefox to start up on Linux and doesn't have all of the extensions that I love so very much in Firefox. Opera's a very good browser (especially when we're comparing browsers with IE), but there are plenty of real reasons that Firefox has achieved more popularity than Opera even among techies. To each his own, as long as his own isn't Internet Explorer, which uniquely makes my job as a web developer a pain in the butt. :P

Didn't get it on mine. What I am thinking is maybe it is shown to people using IE that DON'T currently have Firefox? So maybe Google could use that as a ploy to use Firefox? "Hey you have IE, so why not go get firefox and get the toolbar at the same time!"

Dan

Didn't come up on mine either, could be IE 7 beta 2 doesn't bring it up (that's what I'm using)...and I've gotten so I like it a LOT better than Firefox.

I saw it yesterday on my school computers... They're running IE6. I've harvested such a hate for internet explorer from school. When I checked today however (exact same computer) it was gone.

It just so happens that things from Google Labs gets put there sometimes. One of the things in Google Labs is the Google toolbar for firefox. Perhaps you have never visited the Google Lab before ?
You should check it out sometime.

Bad combination. FireFox and Google toolbar are the worst things running together. It keeps your CPU running very high with a lot of memory consumed. The only way out of that is to remove Google toolbar from FireFox.

Ya most likely it was just the labs posting about one of their toys. I think the Firefox w/ Google toolbar preinstalled is relatively new.

And most likely it was targeting anyone without Firefox, not just IE. I mean why ask someone who is already using Firefox to download what they are already using.

While it is definite support for Firefox, as the article mentioned. Google has its own reasons for doing this.

I was right, check out my reply above. I checked the site on my friends computer which didn't have firefox, and his IE didn't have the Goolge toolbar, and thats what I got.

So it seems as if, if you have IE but it does NOT have the Google Toolbar, you will see the advertisement. However, if you already have Firefox (w/ or w/o the Google toolbar) or IE that already has the Google toolbar...you wil not see the ad.

By accident opened IE and it went to the the google page. Saw the ad for this so I was curious and so I googled "is google promoting firefox" and here I am.

Regardless, very interesting that some people are seeing it and others arent...

In a way its good that Firefox gets more exposure, however I dont like the tactics google is using...sullying the good google name.

i've been using firefox probably since January 06 or maybe before (can't remember) and have had no problems. i just installed a tool that will allow IE to be opened in firefox - have only had two incidents where firefox would not open an IE (but that was no problem as i have IE also) - have not tried the new tool yet - will let you know if it does not work .

Personally, I like firefox.

This isn't the home page, but try this link and then you'll see how they push Firefox.

I've found leaders in other organizations also pushing Firefox for their members -- even those organizations that are government sponsored.

The google homepage is not all that is where google is promoting FirFox. In the Adsense advertising program, they have banner advertisements that promote firefox. So there are thousands and thoudsands of websites out there *made* to promote FireFox.

I'm not getting the Firefox promotion and I lost my Firefox access. I like to use it with my IE so that I could keep it opened to the dictionary page while I did my emailed letters. Now I just get an error message. Can you tell me how to sign up to the free Firefox? I miss it.
Thanks,

I just type dowload and firfox in the Google search box. On my new computer, The first hit I got in april on my new computer was "Google firefox" where the Google search toolbar appears as an extra in Firefox. In fact ist was not my intention to use this one. I could hide the tollbars I did not like and use (since I want a full screen for the actual web pages.
I use at home and on my work desk both Firefox 1.0.5.4. At home I have sometimes difficulties. Some programs wont start like Terraexplorere, some fill in screens do sometimes not work. Here on my work place, I cannot remeber to have been forced to switch to IE, while somthing did not work.
