That was quick: Last week,
Yahoo acquired technology from Meedio, a company which made a Windows Media Center-like application for recording TV and other media-related jobs. This week, Yahoo is
offering a beta version of Yahoo Go, a free Windows download that provides DVR functionality (with no monthly fee), tools for enjoying photos and music, and more. (
Via GigaOM.)
To make Yahoo Go do everything it's capable of doing, you need a decent PC with lots of disk space, a broadband connection, a TV tuner card with video input, a remote control, and a TV you can hook up to the computer. But if you're interested in putting a Windows PC at the center of your living-room entertainment and don't have a Media Center-equipped system, this should be worth a look. I'm curious how it compares to venerable for-pay software products like
SnapStream's $70 BeyondTV and the
$80 SageTV.
Hmm, that sounds pretty interesting. How exactly could you get this to work if you have a cable box(digital)? I'm guessing they don't have tuner cards that can decode digital cable channels, or do they?
I couldn't get it to work. SageTV has worked well for me.
Meedio was crap, I hope Yahoo adds client access, FIREWIRE STB support, Multiple tuner configs (e.g Digital/Analog with different lineups per the EPG), etc. then it might have a chance at FREE. FREE is only good when it is worth FREE, LMAO!
