New From Yahoo: Free DVR Software

That was quick: Last week, Yahoo acquired technology from Meedio, a company which made a Windows Media Center-like application for recording TV and other media-related jobs. This week, Yahoo is offering a beta version of Yahoo Go, a free Windows download that provides DVR functionality (with no monthly fee), tools for enjoying photos and music, and more. (Via GigaOM.)

To make Yahoo Go do everything it's capable of doing, you need a decent PC with lots of disk space, a broadband connection, a TV tuner card with video input, a remote control, and a TV you can hook up to the computer. But if you're interested in putting a Windows PC at the center of your living-room entertainment and don't have a Media Center-equipped system, this should be worth a look. I'm curious how it compares to venerable for-pay software products like SnapStream's $70 BeyondTV and the $80 SageTV.

Hmm, that sounds pretty interesting. How exactly could you get this to work if you have a cable box(digital)? I'm guessing they don't have tuner cards that can decode digital cable channels, or do they?

I couldn't get it to work. SageTV has worked well for me.

Meedio was crap, I hope Yahoo adds client access, FIREWIRE STB support, Multiple tuner configs (e.g Digital/Analog with different lineups per the EPG), etc. then it might have a chance at FREE. FREE is only good when it is worth FREE, LMAO!
