ABC Puts TV Shows Online For Free

Latest news in the rapidly-developing world of Internet TV: ABC is putting Desperate Housewives, Lost, Commander in Chief, and Alias up as free Webcasts, the day after their broadcast premieres. You'll be able to jump from chapter to chapter, but--here's the gotcha--there will be commercials you can't skip.

I'm not yet sure what technology ABC is using, or or whether it'll deliver gorgeous full-screen video or a tiny, choppy window. We're presumably talking streaming-only viewing here, not downloads you can take with you. (ABC is, of course, selling downloadable shows via Apple's iTunes Music Store.) All of this is a two-month test that begins in May.

ABC also announced Soapnetic, a broadband TV channel for Verizon DSL customers featuring some pretty old-school content: soap operas. I'm not sure whether this will only be available on Verizon for marketing or technical reasons. But even though I've never watched an entire episode of a soap opera in my life--okay, maybe one or two back in the golden age of Luke and Laura--I'm happy to see niche broadband programming channels start to pop up.

Internet TV is still in its very, very early stages, and not every content owner is being as bold as Disney/ABC in trying out different technologies and business models. Still, it's pretty remarkable how much has happened in just the past few months.

Between the shows available on iTunes and AOL's In2TV and NBC's Webcasts of the evening news and Google Video's for-pay episodes of stuff like I Love Lucy and other developments, a lot of TV has made the transition to the Net all of a sudden. Content owners seem to be a lot more open-minded and experimental than they were when music started to go digital...and that can only be healthy.

Do you see yourself watching any of these ABC shows on the Web? And do non-skippable commercials sound like an affront, or a reasonable deal? (You can always do what people have done for sixty years to avoid TV ads: wander off to the kitchen or bathroom when a commercial comes on...)

I like it. This is the future. Soon we will no longer be slaves to schedules telling us when we should watch something. I'm pretty down for it, provided it's good video quality. I don't mind the commercials. TV exists to make money....NOT simply for your enjoyment. They still need to make money just like everything else. I've dealt with commercials my entire life, they won't start bothering me now.

I'll put up with commercials similiar to that which we already have on TV. What I won't do is pay for a poor quality DRM'ed version when I already pay for cable.

To add, i'll admit i've been partaking in the perhaps slightly less than legal practice of downloading shows via torrents (although, I don't see how it's any different than somebody taping it for me....), which I recently hooked my dad on. He loves Smallville, but tends to miss it when it airs. I introduced him to torrents.......now he actually tends to just download it and watch it on the job via his laptop.

I know that I have missed every episode of the O.C. on t.v. but I haven't missed an episode yet... Same with Prison Break.

I'd like it to be download kind of thing, thus allowing time-shifting and through iTunes. I'm sure they can work with Apple to develop the technology that does not let you skip ads. And people would have the choice of buying or well, downloading with ads. I personally would download them but not look at the ads--kind of like I do now with regular television

Oh, and personally I think it's time for a shift in how commercials themselves work. I think it would be more beneficial to the companies if they used primarily in-show advertisements. I know some people get alittle worried about that, but I think it's the best of both worlds. Take "I, Robot", for example. The product placement in that movie only made it that much more immersive. Everything was.....REAL. He did drink "Random Beer X", he drank Dos Equis. He didn't drive "FutureCar", he drove an Audi. I think transitioning to placing products WITHIN shows means that you really *CAN'T* avoid them....downloaded or not. And I think it's just that much more effective. You know, one example I can think of is on "The King of Queens". He works for "IPS", clearly supposed to be "UPS". Seems like UPS could really benefit by giving the show some money to actually get the UPS brand INTO the show.

That has the potential to be disasterous (you know, you could suddenly get Captain Picard standing up from his command chair and saying "It's got to be, Applebee's")

You know, I should be a millionaire with these ideas.

I think that would be annoying- I don't want to feel like I am watching a TV ad.

I've seen this done in movies- & you feel like you are watching an ad on tv & not a movie.

How annoying is that?

IPTV is here. There are several vidcasts about technology, however abc, the wb and several others are stepping in the right direction. I dont too much watch television anymore mostly webcasts and online content. In the next year or two there should be some exciting things happening with IPTV.

Until they make a 72 inch computer monitor, what's the point of watching TV on a computer? Retarded.

"Until they make a 72 inch computer monitor, what's the point of watching TV on a computer? Retarded."

maybe not everyone has a 72 inch tv?

we have a g5 imac and we watch movies & tv shows that we have missed on it in our bedroom daily. it's beautiful to watch.. and it even has a remote!

jackofallblacks: That's why we have media center technology. You can simply stream the internet TV to your 72 inch. Or simply integrate everything, assuming your 72 incher has a DVI input. It CAN be a 72 inch computer monitor.

I run everything off a 37 LCD TV.

THIS IS AWESOME. THIS IS THE FUTURE.

So long as the quality is at least what is on iTunes, I'm never going to watch another episode on TV again. I dont care about the ads. Hell, I get ads even when I pay for cable or satellite, so this is AWESOME. Lets just hope Fox and NBC are next to try this so I can catch Simpsons and Family Guy and Law and Order for free LEGALLY :)

I'm all for it! I hate having to plan my schedule around watching the few TV shows I actually make plans to watch. I miss a lot of them because of activities, meetings, etc. While the commercials don't thrill me, I recognize that the money for such services has to come from somewhere. I hope this trend continues.

lol @ the 72-inch tv complaint

You can sit three five from a 30" screen or 10 feet from a 72" screen and you know what? They'll occupy the same size/space in your field of view.

Just because TV manufacturers try to tell you big screens are better doesnt mean they are, sucker.

Yet another reason for 'screen time' instead of getting out of your chair and getting some excersize. OK the guilt is over, bring on Burns and Allen..
