Last Call For Pre-Macworld Expo Speculation

Posted by Harry McCracken | Monday, January 09, 2006 9:48 PM PT

Macworld Expo San Francisco kicks off Tuesday morning--it is, full disclosure, operated by a sister company of PC World--and as usual, all eyes will fall on the Moscone Center in the morning as Steve Jobs gives his keynote. I don't have a clue what he'll talk about, but I'll bee there and will do my darndest to blog the event as it happens. (If I fail to do so--my phone mysteriously stopped getting service during Jobs' last unveiling--I'll post a report soon after.)

Meanwhile, it's always fun to idly speculate on what may be in store. Think Secret has a lengthy roundup that mentions widescreen, Intel-based iBooks, a media-centric Mac Mini, movie downloads via a beefed-up .Mac service, a new version of iLife, something called iWeb, a new iPod Shuffle, another iMac, and (whew!) Apple-branded TVs. Meanwhile, AppleInsider has written of some sort of iPod-related boombox. And here's are some entertaining musings from Macworld's Philip Michaels.

It's a pretty safe bet that not all of these will arrive tomorrow...and I'll predict that we'll get at least one genuine surprise. You care to venture any guesses?

I'd be happy if Apple could just come out with a version of itunes that worked reliably under Win XP. My son's $300 ipod has already cost me far more than that in time spent trying to get itunes 6.0.1.3 working on his WinXP computer. The apple Kool-aid drinkers reply in unison, "Buy a mac." Don't tell me the product is WinXP compatible when it isn't. Tell me what the conflicts are before I buy, not after 10 hours of uninstall/reinstall with no results.

Hey, Mac Addict, I could EAT the F'ing Manual and itunes 6.0.1.3 still wouldn't work on my son's PC. Fortunately, I have an abundnce of PC's, so instead of having to restore the PC and start over I was able to just install from the CD on a different computer. I still hold out hope for a new version of itunes.

BTW, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

Personally, I'll stick with Creative products and Musicmatch.
