RealPlayer's Really Annoying Legacy

Side note on this week's news of a settlement and partnership between Microsoft and RealNetworks: Much of the response I heard from, er, real people (both in person and in response to my blog posting) related to Real's history as one of the most notoriously annoying companies in PC history.

For instance, time was when RealPlayer was extraordinarily grabby when it came to changing media settings without getting your clear OK--a policy which, I'm convinced, did a lot to define deviancy down in the tech world, setting the stage for adware and other programs which cheerfully reconfigure our PCs to serve their own purposes.

Then there was the era when RealPlayer forced its Message Center ad system on you--it popped up ads even when you weren't using the player, and couldn't, in theory, be disabled. That was when I decided to ban RealPlayer from all of my PCs. (Other folks I know did much the same thing.)

I've since rescinded that ban. The current version of RealPlayer is (relatively speaking) a kindler, gentler one, and its site no longer seems to go out of its way to make it hard to figure out how to download the free version of the software. (It does, however, try to convince you to buy the fee-based edition even after you've specifically asked for the free one.) And Real's Rhapsody service is downright cool.

These days, I'm more annoyed by Windows Media Player 10; while it's better than earlier versions, it still feels bloated, and I've found it to be fragile. (I may be in the minority here: My PCW colleagues voted it as the 47th best product of 2005.)

But many folks still shudder at the name "Real," based on its cheesy legacy. There's a lesson here: Treat your customers like bozos, as Real did for a long time, and you'll develop a shabby reputation that's hard to shake.

Lets send you spam then, SPAMABABA! You can burn. Treat others the way you want to be treated... that's the golden rule. So, I'm assuming that you want hundreds of thousands of e-mail a day that contain malware, obscene images, and scams. OK, then let's start spamming you! See how you like those piece-of-crap messages forced into your inbox and taking up all your space... I hope you get a very nasty virus that will permanently damage your computer and make you lose all your valuable data.

Directed to the first anonymous poster:
Man, someone needs some quiet time. Why so angry, brother (or sister)? Are you replying to McCracken's blog entry or are you just a tad mental?

I also banished RealPlayer a while back and have no intention of letting it back on my system. There are too many other choices out there to settle for RealPlayer, especially considering its nasty history. Fool me once...

I won't touch Real, haven't for years, because of how, when installing realplayer, you'd end up with tenacles of stuff throughout your system that were hard to delete and generally were a royal pain. I hate it when a program installs other stuff without asking. At work, when I have to use a computer where all the video files are associated with "real", I immediately change them over to Windows Media Player. I still don't trust Real, still have a negative visceral reaction.

Yeah, well the good new is the Asshat responsible for some of the most egregious features finally quit. He came back from the dead, not once, but twice.

Now we have a clean slate. I wonder how many generations it will take before we recover?

If you disable the message center in the preferences, you will not be so likely to confuse it with your satanic visitations.

Sorry folks, I've always found real to be easier to use for us idiots who taught ourselves how to use a comp. Windows media just wants to keep trying to hide the things you're looking for JUST when you need them. I'll use it for it's own files, but everything else gets REAL. Oh, I use the freebies of both as needed. LOL

No thanks Real. Figured you out long ago and I have a long memory. If I HAVE to play real files, I just use real alternative, as does everyone else I know. You just don't deserve a second chance (or is it 47th chance?!)

Once JUNK always JUNK, use "real alternative" as a "rm" player. Realplayer may have changed but you can't trust this software company. They forced this JUNK on us once and they will do it again once they sucker enough people back to using there JUNK product. DON'T DO IT....

I use the current realplayer in addition to about 5 other media players. None of these players are perfect, but I've found that each of the ones I use does something a little better than the others. Although realplayer has dropped considerably on my list during the past year , I don't take it personally. I get a kick out of seeing how many people just come out of the woodwork to jump on the ole R1 hate bandwagon. Don't have a coronary people, it's only a mediocre media player. When it comes to realplayer people are realpissed.

As SonnyB said, use RealAlternative, or alternatively >no pun intended< use Media Player Classic. Just Google "KLite Mega Codec Pack" and a 30MB download later, you're set to watch almost everything through MPC. Latest version is 3.3< or something, last one I got was 3.3.x.

~Cheers~

MP 10 came with my machine, I'ts OK, It's flaky though,Ihave to beat it with reg. mech. wrench from time to time. Tried Real, not impressed. Think I'll try Winamp next, heard some good things about it, guess i'll find out if it's BS or not.

Why don't you guys try QuickTime or iTunes? I think that those are better than anything else on my computer (QuickTime 7 can be a little flaky, though)

Real Alternative is cool, but I've found that nobody encodes in realmedia format anymore -- its all divx/xvid or old-fashioned mpg (and maybe some mov's thrown in).

And that's a good thing.

Zoom Player and BS Player pretty much always work, with all sorta of crazy old and new formats. But for simple mp3s i like WinAmp still. Nice n' simple. :)

i use winamp and i never have a problem. ive been using it for years now. i remember having to deal with that real player junk. When i come accross a computer now that has real on it, one of the first things i do is uninstall that crap.

I have a small PC service company, specializing in virus and malware removal. With all my clients I recommend they get rid of RealPlayer and I give them Real Alternitive instead. Real has been bad in the past and as of yet can't be trusted.

Realplayer sucks. Real Bad.
I used it initially few years back. it would change all my media settings without my permission, bombard me with ads, and would make itself a default player to load itself on windows startup (meaning it was using my RAM when i didn't need the player).

I uninstalled it and have never used it again. Will NEVER use it.

I haven't missed it at all. There have been few files in last few years that needed Realplayer. But i decided i could live without them.

Real player was/is a real pain.

Posted by R.L.M. "Use iTunes--BAH, the last version of Quicktime installed iTunes without so much of a By your leave, so I had to uninstall it. The whole thing of installing progs without notifying you is what the point is here. Companies MUST notify customer's and give them a choice of wether to install or not. Remember AOL back in the late 90's? Updates loaded automatically and did they ever say what these updates were for? NO, AOL sucked then and now Road Runner broadband from Time Warner offers AOL free to customers--I foresee the day when Road Runner requires AOL to be loaded, then they can go to HE11.

I'm with you, Harry - Windows Media Player is the WORST! I've tried everything I can find to try and "fix" the darned thing, but in the end it only plays audio. Any video is just .005 seconds of picture and then a black screen, no matter what CODECS I donwload, or which version I try.

Of all the media players I've tried or tinkered with, iTunes and Winamp are my favorites. They behave themselves, play nicely with others, and don't demand my (or my computer's) constant attention.
