Apple: Video iPod, TV Downloads, New iMacs

(Note: Apple managed to do their event in a location where I can't get Cingular signal. Very clever. I blogged as I watched, anyhow...and here's the news.)

I'm sitting in the California Theatre (which is beautiful) in San Jose, Treo in hand, waiting for things to get underway. A few lost souls are still searching for available seats. Five minutes to showtime.

And here we go. Steve Jobs is taking the stage. "Weve got some amazing stuff to show you this morning." In three acts.

Act one: There's going to be a new iMac, which will be thinner than the current, year-old model. It'll have an iSight Webcam built into the top of the bezel.

A new app called Photo Booth will help you snap your photo with the iSight. Steve says it's incredible and fun, and the demo does indeed look neat. It even has flash--it makes the iMac LCD do a burst of white.

Steve is using Photo Booth's built-in morphing to make himself look really silly. Huge laughs.

Front Row is another new iMac feature--Media Center PC-like music, movies, and photos, with a remote that looks like an iPod cousin. (Very small, very simplem just six buttons.) Looks nice and slick, but not revolutionary.

Two new iMac models-17" starting at $1299 and 20" starting at $1699. Shipping now.

Act two: The iPod. It's selling well. Over a million Nanos sold so far.

What about the big iPod? "It's time to replace it...and yes, it does video."

The new model is significantly thinner, with a larger-but not huge-screen (2.5", 320 by 240). It decodes h.264 video. There will be 30GB and 60GB models, for $299 and $399, in white and black. Available next week. "This is the best music player we've ever made." We see a commercial for it, twice. And another, with Eminem. Twice.

Jobs repeatedly calls the video "a bonus." This is a music player, still. Act three?

iTunes. Version 5 is a month old. Time to replace it with iTunes 6.

"Gifting" allows you to give a friend songs, albums, and playlists. Users can now review music-neat. There are now Amazon-like suggestions of music to buy.

And...video. You can now buy music videos for a buck ninety nine apiece. And-this is fun-short cartoons from Pixar.

You can put video on 5 PCs and unlimited iPods, but can't burn them to disc.

Steve's now using an iPod to show stuff on the theater screen. Music, photos, and now a U2 video. iTunes 6 is available today.

"We do have one more thing today."

Which are TV show downloads, thanks to a Disney deal--Desperate Housewives, Lost, Night Stalker, and a couple of Disney Channel shows. Old episodes and new ones, the day after broadcast. No ads. $1.99 apiece.

Here's Bob Iger, the head of Disney. Looks like Steve Jobs and him are indeed on speaking terms. He's talking about the crossroads of content and technology. Nice to see Disney be first on board with something new.

Steve: "Sometimes that first step is the hardest one." And they're taking it.

Finally, an encore. Here's Wynton Marsalis. And the least surprising thing about this event is that he and his quartest are sensational.

No instant revolutions happened this morning...but some extremely nice-looking products showed up. Apple now has a platform for selling video. The TV thing could be the start of something huge. And Steve Jobs's response to the Media Center is becoming clearer.

That sucks! We just bought my daughter 20 GB Ipod Color for $300. If they would have TOLD us there was a 30 GB Ipod with video coming out in a month, I can tell you for sure I would have waited for it!

"That sucks! We just bought my daughter 20 GB Ipod Color for $300."

I don't think I've ever made a technology purchase where I didn't feel screwed within six months of the purchase. Especially with Apple. You just have to prepare yourself in advance by telling yourself that whatever you buy, it's going to be outdated the day you buy it. Technology marches on...

Doug: They gotcha! Now you gonna spend $600.00 with Apple instead of only $300.00.

Do you guys really think they do this by accident? They make you buy now what they have to offer, rather than saying "hold on, wait 6 more months when we really improved it". They want your $$$ now.

PS. Doug your short! LOL So it Bobby!

PSS. Screen shots would have been a great add on to this story. I had to go to another site that did have screen shots. They look great. Maybe I will wait 6 months to get it! LOL

Im happy with Apples news. Think of the possibilities coming down the road.
Wish we had a palm... now that palm is loading its new treos with Microsoft crap.
As far as buying a new Pod. when you buy technology you buy it for the given day. true its already out dated by the time you buy it...
Don forget apple realease great updates and new products atleast every 6 months. I cant say that for Microsoft ... the only thing they release a virus and hack patches.

I've been waiting for about 2 months for this to come out. All the rumors were true, this is truely a fabulous upgrade for the same price as the old models. I've already ordered mine so I'll have it the maximum days before the next update comes out

Can you return it .. ie asa satisfaction guaranteed thing, ie say you are happy with it .. but don't say you just want the other model. NOt a lie, just a selective telling of the truth.

Well, ThinkSecret reports that the video capability is already in the current iPod, but just disabled. Hopefully somebody will find out how to enable it. They also mentioned a bigger video iPod later in 2006. Like rodd said, there is always a better pod tomorrow.

Apple sure makes great music/video players. Too bad they can't make better 'puters than Dell/Microsoft.

I am sure that just as many websites have shown you how to "hack" the Nano, and the original Ipod, there will be Hacks for the video Ipod to allow you to watch DVD's that you store inside. It is just a matter of time, my friend.

That iMac is the single greatest breakthrough in technology since the first PC! it has everything! a built in movie camera, built in stereo speakers, built in microphone, built in firewire, built in 20" screen, built in wireless internet, built in Bluetooth, built in Modem, built in Slot-loading Dual-Layer DVD-RW drive, built in iLife, Preinstalled with OS X TIGER---no stupid 'home edition' but the real whopping deal, 64 bit, 250gig hard drive, great graphics card, PCI express, 2.5gig DDR2, Screamin fast.... and less than 1.5" wide! Plus it only needs one cord to work: the power cable! This thing is awsome, and it puts all the other computer makers (i.e. Dell, Hp) TO SHAME!! they cant make this if they tried, it is truly a work of art.

There are already tutorials on how to get your own dvds into the new ipod video. I am very excited to get this! I have a Palm LifeDrive too, but somehow, life would be more ordinary if I didn't own this ipod also. With 60 gb of memory, I can have an abundance of music and my movies to accompany me where ever I should venture. Thank you Apple!

hey there, i use 3 programs to get my dvd's onto my 60Gb video ipod.
- first i rip the dvd using dvdripper.
- then i use a program called videora ipod converter to convert the ripped dvd to mpeg 4 or watever.
- next i use itunes to get it onto my ipod.

this method is fairly time consuming. has anyone any other methods that are better??

Maybe it is me, or my computer, but i don't know. I always have a problem actually getting the video on the ipod.

I have my .vob movie files on my drive, i convert the files to .mp4 with videora, and then itunes won't add them to the ipod.

Dudes, please.... if you haven't figured out how to donwload movies/dvd's directly to your Ipod, go to pqdvd.com , there you can get a program that converts DVD's directly to Ipod format where you can then put them into your Itunes library and load them to your Ipod and watch, I've already converted over 10 dvd's to ipod format to watch on my Ipod or connect to a computer and watch with Quicktime on the big screen thru my SVGA cable to TV.

my goodness people, there is an online manual you can look at. first, yes the videos have to be a specific format, namely .mp4, .mov, and some others. you can download videora for free and it will convert almost anything to those formats.

after that, you must add those converted files to your itunes library, and drag and drop them into your ipod icon on the left.

if you want you can log on to the music store and download music and videos for $1.99 a piece.

Ok, it's pretty simple... no need to hemmorhage guys.

First, take your DVD and put it in your hard drive. Use a free program called DVD Decrypter to "rip" the movie to your hard drive (in the IFO MODE).

Once the file is on your hard drive somewhere (it will be a .VOB file), get the free program called Videora Ipod Converter (videora.com) and choose a method of conversion under the "Settings" tab.

It will take a while to convert the movie. Once it's converted, it will be a .MP4 file that you can open up in iTunes. Once in iTunes, transfer it right into the video iPod.

Hope that helps.

if you want to put DVD videos onto the iPod video, you have to convert the format to .AVI or .MP4. i fouind .MP4 works better in that iPod and .AVI works (looks) better on the monitor/ tv

I'm having a problem putting the viedos that I have on my playlist onto my ipod video. First I'd use the DVD decrypter to convert the videos and then vViedora to convert them to itunes. The movies would get on my playlist fine, but when I plug my ipod into my computer i get the message "Some of the songs in the iTunes library including "..." were not copied to the iPod because they cannot be played by this iPod."
I tried the "convert to mp3" button, but that doesn't do anything.
