The Apple iPod Nano: "1000 Songs. Impossibly Small."

Posted by Harry McCracken | Wednesday, September 07, 2005 11:48 AM PT

Here's a picture of the iPod Nano, swiped from Apple's Web site (where there's more info on the device). It looks at least as nifty in real life, and we'll post a hands-on review just as soon as we can.

By the way, no more rainbow of color choices--this player's available only in standard iPod white and in black.

Am I the only one disappointed with the change to a color screen? I was hoping for extended battery life due to the switch to flash memory. My Karma gets 14 hours.

The hard-drive Mini got 18 hours. The specifications for the Nano state 14. No doubt the thinner case required a smaller battery.

The sadest part about all of the ipods is that you are tied to iTunes as a service. It works okay but I'd rather have a choice. I know that a tweak lets people sync ipods with Winamp but the jury's still out if this will work with that one.

hopefully it won't be as unreliable as my mini-ipod is. I'm on my 3rd. All replaced by apple. Faulty drive, faulty lcd. and now...pathetic battery life. 45 mins....

I think I'll ask for a nano this round.

Where's the fm or voice recording capability like its competitors?
Personally, I'd also like to see it use regular replaceable batteries, and some of its regular battery competitors get as much as 35 hrs on a charge. Admittedly, they're not as thin.
No nano pour moi.

I had ordered a mini on 9/4, thankfully Apple halted my order (without me knowing) until they released it; then they contacted me to ask if I wanted to upgrade. Whew! Sorry about you folks who ordered one a few days earlier...

"oh my freaking god. i got a mini just yesterday and apple had to do this to me. oh my god. oh my god. really, wtf." -- You could return your mini (if it isn't personallized) I think they might allow returns for 10 or 14 days.

I had made up my mind to get a mini last night after mulling it over for a week or two. I go to apple.com at 12:10 this AM and there it is!!! Bought a black 4 gig nano. I also have a 1 gig Creative MUVO TX FM. I have more than one computer (XP Pro, XP Home, Linux Ubuntu and a Powerbook G4) so why not several players? Solves all my problems.

The Karma is just soooo ugly though!
I find my mini really good, but it did not quite deserve all the hype it received. I have used it every day for 1 year, and as yet, no probs. I am kind of glad it isnt as slim as the Nano, as I think I would break it in about 2 seconds!

First off, why the heck do you guys want a fm tuner? It's a freakin MP3 player!! And to those who are crying because they just bought a ipod mini: seriously, it has been out for like almost 2 years, a replacment was long due! Maybe people should actually think about stuff before they buy it... As to battery life: how can 14hrs be not enough? I mean really, are you THAT addicted to music? Do you not sleep at night? So basically, I want one. The 4gb black one. heheh. I can't wait to see what comes out next...

For Those who just bought IPOD MINI........

Just return the MINIs if u still have time to the stores where u bought them and exchange it with NANOs. That's simple. Don't complain. Or if u have bought directly from Apple...ask them to replace it with NANAs if u still have time to exchange.

The Ipod nano totally sucks. Sure, it's thinner than my dead uncle's grandma, but the price for a 4gig nano is the same as a 6gig mini. Plus, the color choice sucks. Black or White. Wheee. You got 4 awesome color choices for the mini, and they were shiny.

The Nano rocks it, come on people all ipods are fantastic, minis, photos, shuffles (not quite as cool) nano is great but remember although these new features are fab its still and MP3 player at heart so why should anyone complain? they all are the same at the base (play music). The nano looks fantastic and size looks amazing! Even though I recently brought an ipod never for one second will I regret it!

I have both mini and nano. I find the sound of the mini slightly superior of that of the nano (same music, same download from iTune, same earphone, etc.) with EQ turned off. The bass are slighty rounder on the mini and treble are slightly harsh on the nano. You need a good ear though, as the differences are slight. And, this is a personal, hence subjective opinion. Still, for the difference in size and look, the nano overcomes this drawback for my personal choice.

I bought my mini online on amazon. you think they'll exchange it for the nano for me? YAH! I DONT THINK SO EITHER! The mini's an great product. Its just OUTDATED. Its not color, its not flash, its not thin. And i'm bitter because its whole concept is not even two yearsold. How can you be happy with the mini when you know something better is out there? FOR THE SAME DAMN PRICE. (kinda) I am still mad :(

I've read through all of these statements, and none of you have mentioned any of the technical problems with the nano. I'll start with the pros.

The nano has great battery life, and is incredibly durable. It's also really gadgety and nifty.

CONS

The battery of the ipod nano is soldered on. This means that when the battery finally dies(3 years), you are forced to go out and buy a new ipod, as opposed to the old system of mailing in for a new battery.

It costs much more than the mini did, and it holds less music.

The innards are GLUED to the casing. This means that if the nano is heated even minimally, the glue will melt and short the chips, thus ruining the whole ipod.

The nano is NOT worth it. The mini was perfect.

I have both the Mini and the Nano. My nano screen has already cracked, and I'm always losing it inside my pockets. Sure it's in colour and can slideshow photos, but at heart it's an Mp3 player, not a photo album. I prefer my mini. I'd rather have the better quality in a mini than strain my eyes out on looking at photos on my nano.

I'm so happy I bought a Mini before the Nano came out. The Nano is two steps back in so many ways. It's got a color screen, that's where the pros end. The cons: It takes FOREVER to transfer to. The Mini has a hard drive and fills up its 4 GB in like 5 minutes. The Nano's flash memory takes 22 MINUTES to fill, and doesn't support firewire (useless anyway since the memory is so slow). Battery life is WORSE than on the Mini. And it looks 10 years old after a week of use (it gets smudged instantly, so you wipe it, so it gets scratched, smudged again, wipe it... etc). The designers were so fixed on size they ignored everything else. The Nano is a dud, sales are well below expectations, and the video iPod is the dumbest thing I've ever seen - expect a HUGE backlash for Apple.

Right first of all ive never had an ipod before but just got a nano 4 gig from my partner and it is pretty impressive although i listen to my songs on the computer with great soundsystem and when im out im in the car so i simply burn songs onto cd but thats a different matter but tried the headphones and the sounds good and just transferred 847 songs in just 12 mins which is not bad.The back of the nano which is silver is already smuged with holding and is pretty difficult to get clean again and BOB YOU CANNOT DELETE ANYTHING DIRECTLY OFF YOUR NANO go to itunes on your comp thrn open up ipod right click on the song you want to delete and press clear there is no delete option ps make sure your connected first now for deleting pics again go to ipod option /preferences and open a new folder on to desktop or documents and name it wahtever you want i use andys ipod pics then change destination of pics to ipod from my pictures to whatever you made up this option will be on the preferences as earlier stated and all your pics will be deleted i know my words are a bit messed up but if you need i will give you a step by step instruction for everything you need to know later as im rushing out to put a football coupon on lol

DELETING SONGS FROM NANO

Apple says there is no way to delete songs directly off Nano. You have to use ITunes. You can delete On-The-Go stuff, but that does not remove stuff from the Nano.

How dumb is this? I'm stunned by this oversight by Apple. They should be petitioned to upgrade the software on the Nano.

Dear little people in the world i know how to delete songs what our earlier friends forgot to say were u need to right click on your ipod icon in itunes and go to ipod options from there just in the ipod tab and in the music subtab tick the "manually manage songs and playlists" from here the once grey and untouchable songs in the personalised ipod tab in the normal itunes will be maleable and if u right click on a song u will be able to clear it. Go Bleach!!!!!

how do u get the songs from ya computer to ipod

katie
November 10, 2005
1:30 AM PT

Dear Katie
just connect your ipod to computer via the usb connection given in ipod nano container and then u need to install itunes onto the computer. fomr there just let itunes scan for all your music on your computer and set it as your default music player so all songs u download hencforth will become an itunes file and will be automatically added to your itunes folder. Then just go into itunes and on the left vertical navigation bar there should be stuff like your playlists and library and etc. If you should preferablly connect your ipod at this point in time to your computer and itunes should syncronise your ipod to it. Dear Katie
just connect your ipod to computer via the usb connection given in ipod nano container and then u need to install itunes onto the computer. fomr there just let itunes scan for all your music on your computer and set it as your default music player so all songs u download hencforth will become an itunes file and will be automatically added to your itunes folder. Then just go into itunes and on the left vertical navigation bar there should be stuff like your playlists and library and etc. If you should preferablly connect your ipod at this point in time to your computer and itunes should syncronise your ipod to it. A tab saying "your names of ipod whatever it is" ipod click on this and whatever music is on you ipod should appear as the music in the right massive bar. From here just go to update ipod and all your songs should be put into your ipod. To delete unwanted songs just read my earlier thread and u should be fine. The ipod nano sucks more than anything I've ever used in my life. Both my boyfriend and I each bought one and both of us have had nothing but problems in the past month since we've had them. He will load songs to his, but when he goes to use it, there are no songs on it after it says in iTunes that there are. Mine won't shut off, so you have to wait for the battery to die in order for it to ever power off. Not only am I excited about spending nearly $600 for two pieces of crap but I can't wait to waste an entire Saturday afternoon waiting at the apple store "genius bar." It's going to be awesome.

iPod Nano ROCKS! Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, but this thing blows away the mini and anything in the comparable price range. I opted for the Nano because I was looking for something small, concealable, and generally less bulky. It easily holds 1000 songs, is perfect for working out, or simply just not adding to the "bulk" of all my other techno gadgets.

Best feature is the size! If you buy yourself or someone else one gift this Christmas, make it the Nano! (Do buy a case to prevent scratching). Whining about scratching is stupid when so many nice cases exist. This product is very stylish, so just take good care of it! By the way, I found a great neoprene case at best buy that is wonderful to strap on your arm or belt while you work out, run, etc...

some people had told me, that deleteing songs off of nano actually eats up the memory. it would prove that adding songs are actually perminante. that if oyu want to delete it, would have to subtract memory. is this true? some one up there said "i had 61 songs and my 2gb nano is full.... i deleted 500 library's already." the 500 libraries deleted ate up a lot of memory, and resulted in a 60 MB ipod nano. =/ please tell me this aint so!

I figured out how to delete/replace songs on the Ipod Nano. First, connect your Ipod to your computer. Then, select 'EDIT' then 'PREFRENCES' from your Itunes menu. Within in the prefrences section, select "Ipod" then choose the playlists you want to update automatically. (When I first put my Ipod on, it automatically updated EVERY single song that I had on my Itunes, which I didn't want). Once you have selected the playlist, go into Itunes and create it. After you are done, update your Ipod by selecting "FILE" then "UPDATE IPOD". It will update the new songs you selected and the others will be taken off. Seems like an odd way to go as far as deleteing songs, but it works. Hope this helps!

A bit ironic that Apple releases something that's so awkward to use. Isn't Apples shit always supposed to be easy? I got a Nano and two 20$-nonameplayers for the kids this christmas. The cheap stuff had USB directly on the player, didn't even need a cable. I plugged it in an got a new window where i just drag'n drop mp3:s. That's all. Nice and easy.

The Appleplayer on the other hand...
No plug and play, a lot of hassle to get it to be recognized by windows, got to have iTunes + serial which means i can't just connect it to someones elses computer to get some songs. To actually move songs to the player is a bit too non-intuitive, got to create playlists and shit and get it to update the Nano which isn't so easy as it sounds. The front is glass and the back metal, it looks used & dirty after 15 minutes. And what if i would like to take it with me on vacation (with no USB around to charge the damn thing?)

Well, i fell for the hype and bought one. Stupid me. ;)

Maybe i should have just stuck with some cheaper & easier noname PC-player instead.

What can we learn from this? That idiots talking about how superior Apple products always are must be complete fools. Merry Christmas!

P.s. You can delete these renamed & hidden MP3:s through explorer in Windows.

DELETING SONGS FROM ITUNES WITH A NANO:

this took me a while to figure out how to with all these instructions and such.

Plug you ipod in to your computer, then open itunes.

On the side bar where you can select play lists, go to the one for you nano that says "YOUNAME's ipod" and right click it and select the options one.

You should be on the 'Ipod' tab, and go to the
'Manually Manage Songs and Playlists' part and check it/bubble it in.

Click ok, and you should be able to right click on songs now, and clear them from your lists.

To delete pictures, all you have to do is double click on your ipod's name on the side of itunes, it'll bring up a screen, go to edit and then preferences. Click on the photo's tab and deselect Synchornize photo's from. It'll remove all the pictures.

I got a nano for Christmas and i love it! You can get different colour tubes to put it in, so if you don't like the colour, just use them! You can get a charge thing which you can charge while you are travelling and even if you are going on a flight to new zealand, you will spend some time sleeping and will not listsen to music the entire journey. I have had no problems so far, the music was surprisingly easy to put on. Also the photos were a bit of a challenge, but i found it said on the apple website. and i know no how to delete music, although i dont need to do yet. Sure it does cost more than Ipod Mini, but these are Ipods, not strictly mp3 players, and they all have different things. Mini held no pictures and was black and white screen. Ipod Nano has a lot more to offer than ipod mini i say LONG LIVE NANO!

Thanks to everyone that told how to delete songs off the ipod. So many songs on there right now that i do NOT listen too! As in reply to Dante who asked if you could get songs for free; the answer is yes! You need to download a file sharing program like Limewire or WinMX. Just a note file sharing is illegal and you can be fined and put in jail for it if you are caught (which rarely if ever happens to joe shmoe). After getting a program download the songs you want. And use real player or windows media players "transfer to device" option. The ipod should be one of the choices as a device to transfer to. Then just transfer songs or playlists over.
Oh and for all the people who say the nano sucks for the scratches and battery problems you suck. Nothing is ever perfect. That is life. Get over it!
