Best Satellite Radio Yet? Sirius's S50

OK, it's always dangerous to gauge a product by specs and features alone, but Sirius's S50 satellite radio, which it says will be available next month, sounds pretty darn amazing. This is Sirius's first wearable model, and it seems to go Delphi's MyFi (an XM satellite radio, and a fine product in its own right) one better in just about every category.

The S50, first of all, measures 1.9" by 3.9" by .7", which should make it easily pocketable. (The bulbous MyFi will just barely fit into a shirt pocket.) Like the MyFi, the S50 can record radio for later playback, but it has a 50-hour capacity; the MyFi stores a tenth that. And the S50 also does standard digital music formats--MP3 and WMA--as well as radio, while the MyFi is a radio-only gadget.

Oh, and the S50 has a color screen, and an intriguing feature which automatically records content from your favorite channels. (Recording and playback are important features for any wearable satellite radio, since reception inside buildings can be an iffy proposition.)

Downside to all this coolness: The S50 is going go for $360, while the MyFi goes for around $300 these days. (Both of these gizmos are decidedly high-end satellite radios considering that basic models go for less than $100.) The S50 seems to come with fewer trimmings, too--it includes accessories to hook it up in a car, but I can't tell from Sirius's press materials whether it has an FM transmitter (with the MyFi, one's built in). And while the MyFi comes standard with a home dock, it's a pricey accessory ($100) with the S50.

I have (and love) a MyFi, and like XM's programming lineup a bit better than Sirius's. (Actually, the fact that XM has Major League Baseball and Sirius doesn't would make me an XM partisan all by itself.) So I don't think I'll be buying an S50, or any Sirius device, anytime soon. But I'll be curious to see if the S50 lives up to its promise...and how long it takes until a similar, XM-compatible device shows up.
