Now for something that has nothing to do with Apple or Intel: Here's a photo of a street corner in PC World's San Francisco neighborhood. The big Comcast ad bragging that its cable modems are way faster than SBC's DSL has been there for months. (The ballpark reference, by the way, stems from the fact that the billboard is about a block from the San Francisco Giants' home...SBC Park.)
More recently, the SBC-bashing Comcast ad was joined by an SBC Yahoo billboard touting how fast its DSL service is. I'm not sure if the placement is an intentional rejoinder...but
SBC Yahoo's site advertises DSL in flavors up to 3-mbps, the same speed that Comcast is boasting about. (Though Comcast calls it "3000K, presumably because it's worried that bypassers won't know that 3-mbps is better than 768-kbps.)
Of course, even if Comcast and SBC both have service rated at 3-mps, it's possible that their real-world speed varies. And it's possible that Comcast offers more oomph for the money. But it's hard to discuss that kind of subtlety in a conversation that's held via billboard.
All of which led me to wonder: A) how many folks can tell you off the top of their head what speed their broadband connection is rated at; and B) whether your typical DSL subscriber is disgruntled with the service's performance. (I've got DSL--not from SBC--and the answers for me are no and no.)
If you've got broadband, what are you using? And when it comes to its speed, are you pleased, seething, or kind of neutral?
"Now for something that has nothing to do with Apple or Intel"
Thank you.
I have had Comcast service's for over a year for internet connection and many more for tv and phone. Yearly I spend close to $1,500 a year for there services and let me tell you, I would be happier with a DSL connection that worked all the time at a slower rate then the Comcast cable connection I have that stop's working at random times of nearly everyday. Getting it fixed has become nothing more then Comcast blaming the last guy sent out to fix the problem. Is Comcast faster? Maybe, but only when it's working.
I've got Adelphia cable and it is very good. It is rated at 4 mbps, an individual thing won't come close to that however I can run multiple downloads at once and it will run as fast as one at a time. Reliability is also good! Soon however, it will officialy be Time Warner because Adelphia went bankrupt. I am waiting to see how Time Warner is.

I just got adelphia in Dulles corridor (the hi-tech hub of the east) and the speed is nowhere near 4mb. i test it every time i am on the net using cnet bandwith meter. The max i ever got is 500k with the avg. about 150k. DSL is not available at my home so can't tell. but I wish Cox take over instead of comcast after the adelphia deal. with Cox, avg. is 1.2mb and sometime i can get 4mb
I'm a Road Runner customer and I'm extremely happy with it. I haven't had any problems with speed and i currently get just under 3.5mbps. Of Course, this all depends which website i am downloading from!!!!! The only thing i dislike is the 10mb quota on email attachments. I have some friends send me small videos and i occansionaly get overquota messages. Other than that, I have problems
I've been on SBC for years now and I recently went ahead and upgraded to the business class speed of 3mbps for the same price as I'm paying for the other speed (that I can't tell you what it was because I don't remember). It works about the same but I have no complaints. I think I've had it go down once and cycling the modem once fixed that. My brother-in-law is using Comcast and he was having hell like the rest of the nation when Comcast decided to upgrade the speeds for everyone. SBC upgraded everyone's speed over Christmas last year and again I don't remember there being any connection problems. So I just look at those ads and think, "whatever." Isn't the real goal just to be faster than dialup (which I don't miss AT ALL).
I have had SBC in Indiana for about one year. I first signed up for their 1.5 Mbps service and I got around 1.2 to 1.3 all the time. I upgraded to their 3.0 Mbps service and I get 2.6 to 2.7 all the time. It runs 24/7/365 and I have not ever...not ONE time had to reset the modem or anything else.
I get these numbers using NetStat Live while downloading the test files at http://testmy.net
I use SBC DSL Express (1.5 mbs) I can usually hit 1.3 when DL from usenet with my newsreader. Otherwise, it's more limited by the sites I go to. I rarely have an interrupt & thats usually for a min. during a severe storm. I wish they'd reduce the price for current subs when the lower it for new ones; kinda makes me feel ripped off. Otherwise no complaints.
I have been using Comcast for over 2 years. My rated speed is 4000kbps or 4mbps. I usually get about 4100kbps on a regular basis.
My connection is extremely reliable and it has only been down about 2 times in the past 2 years for a total of no more than 3 hours for both times together.
I wouldn't use DSL if they paid me. I love Comcast and I'm sticking with it.
The nice thing about Comcast is this:
Reliability and value. I got Comcast when the speed was 1500kbps. The price: $42.95 a month.
They then jumped me to 3000kbps. The price: $42.95 a month.
Now my speed is rated at 4000kbps. The price: $42.95 a month.
Speed has increased, reliability is the best I've ever seen, and the price has remained the same.
Who can beat that?
I'm on Charter in Missouri and I have 3mbps down/256kbps up. It's rarely down and always fast, so I'm pleased.
In Missouri, SBC offers 1.5mbps for 14.99 and 3mbps for 29.99. Their price is very attractive, a little over what you pay for a dial up. However, I have friends who had really bad experience with SBC service. The further you are away from the main switch, the slower the connection. so I decided to go with Charter Communication, a cable internet connection with 3mbps for 29.99. all my friends are now using Charter because their reliability and speed.
To me Comcast sucks. I've been on MediaOne, At&T and then on to Comcast. Mediaone and AT&T never put any limits on my Newsgroups downloads, but Comcast does. When I complain they give me all sort of BS. They should change their name to Concast.
Sounds like someone above is confusing Bytes per second with bits per second. 500K download is about 4 megabits.
I've got Cox and it frequently hits 500KB which is the 4mbs they say I have for downloads. I like to download different linux pkgs and try them out so I watch this speed quite a bit. Of course it depends on where I am downloading from. I used to have Valor Telecom DSL and it topped out at 768kbs. I was about 11,000 feet from their POP so that was a reasonable expectation but they usually didn't run above 640kbps. Cox has more outages which messes with my Packet8 VOIP but otherwise I prefer cox.
I have DSL from Valor Telecom that is supposed to hit 1,5Mb but hasn't yet. The highest it's topped hast been 1100K. They also throttle Usenet d/l speeds to 800K which sucks.
Recently, they've upgraded new subscribers to a higher u/l speed but haven't bothered to do that to my account. I only signed up 3 months ago so I still consider myself a new customer.
Other than the aforementioned complaints, I'm happy with the service. The cable company here cannot even match these speeds yet and DSL's price either.
I have Adelphia cable at 4mbps. It's generally ok, but has been flakey at times.
I have Comcast. I normally hit their advertised speed. I have been mostly happy with the service for three years.
Comast? don't mention that word............their high speed internet service asolutely sucks!! Customer service are so dumb! (while I was living in Boston and Atlanta.)
I have Adelphia and am very happy with the speed I get. If I really want something to download fast, I boot inito Linux. For some reason, I get faster response times than I do with Windows. I average about 1.5mb, and sometimes have come close to 3mb. Hardly ever have any outage problems.
Time Warner Roadrunner - 8Mb / 512Kb. I get a consistent 7.6Mb/480Kb on most speed test sites.
I live in Florida and have Verizon DSL. I have about 2.7 mbps down and 600 kbps up, so with overhead it comes very close to the advertised speed of 3mpps/768kbps for just 29.99 a month, can cable beat that. Since I use the internet almost 24/7 for both download an upload that is the best service here which doesn't slow down if my neighbor decided to download something. I never had a single hour of downtime, except during power outages, when you can't even use the computer.
Verizon will roll out FIOS (FTTH) some time soon in my area so cable will be left in the dust.
Comcast in Dallas TX sucks!
optonline cablevision-10mb/1mb. i get 9.7 mb (average 1.5mb/s transfer rate/115kb/s upload)
936-950kb/s $44.95 a month
Just got residential 100mbps (with overhead, figure that's 10 megabytes per second) here in Tokyo. $44/mo. (Or is it $46? soething like that.)
Bittorrent swarms get me the fastest results, I can get a 4gb dvd in a couple hours. (A linux distro, say. i never download hollywood music or movies, because U2 and Jim Carrey deserve to be a billionaires.)
Used to be an overnight process with ADSL that cost the same. I'm happy. :)
I'm gonna make you all envious! Here in Cincinnati we have Cincinnati Bell's Zoomtown DSL. I've had them for EIGHT years. Started at 768 kbps for 39.99. A year and a half ago they bumped us to 3 MB (3200kbps) for free then raised price to 42.95 (not bad!). Uploads say 952 kbps but I average 650. I've rebooted my modem maybe four times in eight years and the three outages I've noticed were in the wee A.M. hours. For two years now I call every six months and the phone company matches the local cable company's (Insight) introductory price for six months. I've gotten 3 MBPS DSL for 30.00 a month for two years now!! It's good to be me!
I'm in Iowa and use Mediacom, speed is 3 MB down and 256 k up. Mom used Qwest DSL, what a joke. Cost more, slower when it worked. No problems with reliablity. Dedicated cable user.
It seems to me that broadband services vary widely depending on geography, type of plan, and ultimately how well individual providers manage their systems. I have Alltel DSL and get about 1.2 mbps/200kbps on a good day. However, this fine service costs me $45/month, which is pretty high. Alltel can get away with this because they have no other DSL competition in my part of North Carolina. The cable broadband is pretty good(Charter, RR'r), but not available out in the woods where I live. Like an earlier post said, still beats the heck out of dial-up. Amen!!
we have DSL from bell south , been very good . my wife and i both do online gaming and we motivate pretty darn good . we're happy.
I've been running Surewest Broadband for a couple of years now and the 10MB synchronous (10MBup/dn) has treated me very well. I've been especially happy since they modified their TOS to allow hosting on my home PC. I have to say that my only complaint has been due to net traffic and bandwidth limiting on external servers.
Just reading this, I was amazed at all the people griping over broadband. Our dial-up from a local company called XTN is not a higher KBps rating than our neighbors Sprint DSL, but in real-world use, our dial-up beats the pants off of his DSL. We also have a second phone line for the Internet. I am extremely satisfied with our dial-up service, and unless I see a great reason to switch I'm not going to.
Have had Comcast broadband for a little over a month now and wonder why I waited so long to switch from dial-up. So far the service has been great
We changed from Earthlink DSL to Verizon DSL over one year ok. The Earthlink product was fine but Verizon's price was much less (over $10/mo). Verizon was fine and we swictched to fiber optic (5 Mb down/2 Mb up) for $5 more than DSL with higher speeds availavle. The service has been excellent and reliable. I used to have Comcast cable TV and switched to DirecTV which is better than Comcast. I would consider not watching TV if Comcast were the only choice. Verizon has been fine and fast and consistent. And, No, I don't work there or get a commission.
The SBC Yahoo's site link on the 1st post does not work. I believe that it should be sbc.yahoo.com instead of sbc.yshoo.com
I have DSL at home, and Charter Highspeed at work. I have never had a single problem with my DSL over the six months I've had it. But the charter cable...ugh. I have to power cycle the modem at least once a week. Then I have to call the cable company about once evry two weeks because it STILL doesn't work. Charter has me change a few settings, then it works--for another two weeks. If we had another option for high-speed at the office, we'd do it in a flash.
I have Comcast High Speed 7000/768 kbps for $55 in Cleveland. On the average I get speed test results in the 6.5 to 7.5 Mb from SpeakEasy test servers my upload is about 650-750kbps. I download a 700 MB file off Bittorrent in about 35 min. I have been with them since ATT-BI and Media-1 I get disconnects about once a day but I also download 100-150 GB of data per month. I have to give them a 8/10. I also use a 3rd party firmware (Sveasoft Talisman)for my Linksys WRT-54G router and after installing it I increased my downloads to 8.5-9.5 Mbps and my uploads to around 1000-1100 kbps and I can use my laptop in the park down the street almost a 1/4 mile away.
I have Comcast broadband in Central New Jersey. I was one of the "friendlys" when Comcast rolled out broadband and I was an employee. I've been online for over 20 years - started with 300 baud dialup, and can't imagine going back to something that slow ever.
Dude, all of you guys are a bunch of complainers. In on TimeWarner, having had Mediacom & Comcast in the past in Minneapolis and im getting about 6 Mbps downloading at 600kb/s. Frickin sweet. Bottom line, DSL is a waste of money. Cable rocks no matter where you are as long as you have newer (5yrs or better) cable wires running RG-6 wire from the street to your modem. Anything less and yeah, you will have problems. 6Mpbs is becoming standard across the country and will be at your house soon. Would you rather have DSL where you have to pay $45 for a 1.5Mpbs line or have Cable where you pay $45 for a 6Mpbs line. The choice is obvious to me. For the Editor/Writer of this story, you too need to make the switch. Life is much better on the other side of the fence.
back in Jan 2003, I got Verizon DSL 768k for $29.95/yr, initially was a pain - could not get modem to connect and the customer service kept blaming my house wiring until the 5th call I had an extension cord to connect the modem directly plugged in to the junction box. I had to tell them "it can't be my house wiring, I removed the RJ11 jack from the ground connecting my house altogether, and it is in my modem and no signal!" Suddenly was like "Oh, we will fwd this to our network group".
So finally I got connection and was only 200k but working. After a couple of months was suddenly the full 768k started working and was great. Rock solid and never lost connection unless power was lost on my end.
A few months ago I got a kick up to 1.5Mbps, was just shortly after the FIOS lines were running in my neighboorhood.
I am wondering if I can call them and get the 3M just like the new customer offerings at the same price, really there is no need the 1.5M is just fine with me.
I have Comcast cable and I'm pulling no more than 850K. I feel pretty ripped off becaus ehtey keep sending notices syaing their speed increases and mine did only slightly once. I'm paying between $55-60 a month, whereas IIRC I started off paying like $42 a month.
I have called them about this in the early stages when they went up to 2000K and they said as long as you 'could' get the 2M that's all they guarantee. Yippeee.
I have had Adelphia for six months. Lately, it has been VERY slow. Very disappointed!
In India I get only 3 kilobytes per second. I feel myself very lucky when it gets to 6 kilobytes, what my internet service provider promised. Amd it is a broadband connection.
Comment. I got the new RR premium. 8M/512k. So far I have been getting around 7M/480k up so Im not complaining.

This is hilarious, and I can't believe it. I feel sorry for your broadband company that has dialup speeds. This is hilarious! Welcome to Netzero, where all we do is use a "cache" program to speed up your business.
Anyway, i have Mediacom in Iowa. 3mb/256k well i will say I am a gamer, and it BLOWS! I hate it. But soon to come 10mb/1mb OMGZ! this will be great, but in a small town 60 miles away, Oskaloosa, IA they have 5mb/5mb FIBER!!! WTF! so retarded.. i am so jealous of my friends connection and his FTP sharing capacity. live on my friends..
