More Cell-Phone Service Bizarreness

Posted by Harry McCracken | Sunday, February 06, 2005 3:01 PM PT

A follow-up to my post about Cingular's Byzantine approach to wireless plans and pricing, which even seems to confuse the company itself: I just went to the Cingular site in search of definitive word on what I'm getting with the $19.99 data plan I ended up with for my new PalmOne Treo 650. In different areas of the site, I found two similar-looking pricing grids:

cingular.jpg

Apparently, my $19.99 is buying me 1000 messages, unlimited multimedia messaging, and 3MB of Wireless Internet Express--unless it's actually buying me 1500 messages, 200 multimedia messages, and unlimited Wireless Internet Express. (Boy, I hope it's the latter...I used more than 3MB of Internet access within the first 20 minutes after I powered up my new Treo.)

Like I said before, this kind of stuff seems symptomatic of the entire industry, not just of Cingular. It sure makes it tough for even a savvy buyer to make informed decisions.

Of course, maybe there are folks out there who love their wireless provider. If you do, let me know...even though I just agreed to stick with Cingular until 2007...

Wow, that long? I have been with Verizon for near 6, no 7, or maybe 8 years. AT&T did me an injustice the first year. So we parted company. I get all from VZ, Cell,DSL,phone and long distance. They provide the best cellular coverage for the money. I checked into Cingular and even with their supposed big merger they still did not go where I go. Sorry.

I've been looking seriously at the 650 from Cingular. I was a bit confused by the offerings; its reassuring to know it's not just me. I think I'll wait: Cingular seems a bit expensive and the plans are a gimmick--add the new activation fees to move the whole family, and it will get pricey quick. Maybe my current provider will land the 650, or maybe another hardware vendor will trump the 650.

Maybe you'll do ok with Cingular. But they took over my carrier, AT&T, so I don't expect much. There is a recent Consumer Reports which declares Verizon as having fewer problems than either Cingular or At&T. I don't know what that will be worth, but during the time I had At&T they changed the original contract without telling me, more than once, costing me $$. OK, maybe they did tell me, probably in tiny type that I never saw. But with that kind of deception I will abandon Cingular. I have decided to take a tougher line with these companies. In future I will challenge them directly when they do me wrong. Complaining to the FCC is about useless and I don't worry too much about my credit rating. I will stiff these companies as they would stiff me.

Avoid cingular like the plague. I made that mistake, and when I could not get service in most areas of town, I exercised the 30 day option and cancelled the service. But they still charged me $35 because they had to activate a chip in the phone.

I went with Cellular One when they rolled out their GSM service in May 04. It didn't work in our area that well until Nov 04. Even now I still loose most of my calls and I live close to the tower. Customer service says "its getting better". But in the mean time we pay for horrible service until they get it right? Compliants never resolved.

The only thing cingular has going fore it is rollover. Its customer service is non-existent, their signal about as inconsistent as you can get. I've written so many letters to their corporate office and file complaints with the Florida Attorney general, that they know me by my first name. I finally cancelled after forcing them to cancel my contract without penalty. I love Verizon!

all tough talk when you have no rights...read your Terms and Conditions...and as i have had experiences with all North American providers...THEY ALL SUCK (Canada, US even Mexico) they all are money hungry mongrels...one company i persoanlly worked for(through and outsourcer) the systems were so convoluted (they got worse) that giving the correct info more than 50% of the time was impossible ...and everything changed so quicky, that if you did not get the new training (which was every week, and you were not always scheduled) a customer's bill would be much more they the expected, and then be told they are responsible for the charges whether they were actually told or not...(INSERT PROVIDER NAME HERE) would offer rebates and offers that would be inpossible to redeem (every company's reason for rebates) and if you do happen to get them to the reabte center with the proper docs, there is a quota of denials(rebates that exceed the pay out quota and have to be denied for some reason as to not lose money on the offer) and these will be denied for completely false reasons, the reabte was incomplete, the provider stated it did not match(the plan or activation date) the offer (they outsorce the procesasing,.. so everything has to be confirmed on the providers side and they info they send back will just arribratlly say denied)...now also one other important point...the cust serv rep your talking to, times out of 10, does not work for the provider they have no interest in your well being they just want you off the phone so they can get back to their ...book...conversation...web surfing...you don't matter and this person bears no responibility for their actions(which is also stated in all T's & C's)...also if they changed your contract terms you do have the option to cxcl...ALSO...WHENEVER you change your rate plan ask if this is going to extend your contract...your rate plan just includes the minutes in the plan that you can use...all your freebies and addons(unlimted n&w, free texting...free anything) are called promotions and these will be removed when you change your rate plan...you are changing the contract... and for the NEW "promos" you may have to extend to at least 1yr from date you change the rate plan(verbally) 2YR CONTRACTS REQUIRE WRITTEN CONFIRMATIUON...so if they put you on 2 yr promos and u don't sign anything...guess what ...after 3 month's you'll be automatically moved to the 1 yr promotion and contract

and to explain the rate plans above...you try and integrated 43 million customers with 450 national and 230 regional rate plans and see what you come out with.

Cingular DOES NOT OFFER INSURANCE OR EXTENDED WARRANTY service for the Treo 650. When I signed up, the salesperson assured me that I could get insurance after the package arrived. I called back to another salesperson, who said that I could get insurance for the FREE phone that we were purchasing for our daughter, but NOT for the Treos. These phones are too fragile to survive being dropped - just ask any Treo owner who's dropped their phone. So, I decided to cancel my order - an ordeal that took a day and a half of my time. Anybody wanna bet when I'll get my first bill for the (supposedly cancelled) service? Cingular is hopeless...

I used to have cingular and when I went in one of their stores, I had a nice casual conversation with one of the reps and he said that cingular sucks. I asked him if he had cingular and he said that he had Nextel. Then, while helping another customer, he went on the phone to talk to another rep from their account activation office (I assume) and they were joking around about how cingular sucked! From then on, I switched!

Here's a question: If i do indeed get a treo 650 and would like to surf the web, not just media net, do I need to pay $79.99 for a laptop data package or can I pay the $19.99 for media net and do the same?

I hate to say this, but the San Francisco-based CellularOne, then AT&T, then Cingular carriers have treated me pretty well with a good plan ($40 for 600 anytime nationwide, unlimited 7pm night and weekend, free long distance, and $25 unlimited data for my Treo 600.

OTOH, my Wife's experience with Verizon was a nightmare and I took a $175 charge to drop that line and port it back to AT&T. We never could get a signal at my house even though they claimed I was within a mile of 3 towers. They kept telling me that they would fix the problem shortly but after 3 phone swaps and 9 months, still no service.

I WAS A LOYAL AT&t customer for 4 years before I switched to CINGULAR BIGGEST MISTAKE I EVER MADE, WE HAVE 0 RECEPTION HERE, OVER CHARGED ON THE BILL, AND THEY WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. SERIVCE PEOPLE ARE VERY RUDE, EVEN THEIR AGENTS HERE IN TOWN HAVE THE SAME ATTITUDE. I AM LOOKING AT VERIZON NOW AND WILL CHANGE.

We've had horrible experiences so far with Cingular. The first one was that they put my husband's name as "Carl" someone instead of his real name (which is PAUL something else). Interesting mistake, since during the registration process he filled out all the forms and they had two forms of ID for him! So when we called Cingular to fix it, they said it was too different from his real name, so he would have to come in person and prove his real name! What?? And the reception is horrible. I travel all week, and I have never hit anywhere that has decent reception!

As far as celluar companies go i think they all SUCK!!!!!!!!!! Verizon has accused my husband and I of fraud when we got our phones through them. All this because we live in a rural area. Then when i had problems making a payment thru the website i kept getting the run around and lots of double talk about changing the payment or reversing the payment to my checking account. Verizons tag line should not be "CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW" BUT INSTEAD "NOHTING BUT TROUBLE"!!
