I'm in New York for TECHXNY, the computer trade show that was once known as PC Expo. As I expected, it's yet more evidence that the day of the massive computer trade show is mostly over.
Back in the day, PC Expo filled the entire Javits Center to the rafters, and we needed to send around fifteen editors to cover it properly. This year, it occupies one modest wing of the building, and I'm PC World's one representative. At least it's still alive and ticking--unlike Comdex, which was called off this year, and CEBIT America, which announced that this year's show would be the last one.
Still, there are bunch of significant companies here (Microsoft, HP, Iomega, and Xerox, for instance) and a pretty good cross-section of stuff, from business products to consumer electronics. And I'm one of the judges for the "best of show" awards. I'll report back on anything that's worth reporting back on...
I've been going to this show since it first started. I can tell you that this was the worst of what has become an irrelevent expo. This was the smalles show that I remember, even after last year's disaster.
Many companies that did show, such as Microsoft had far smaller exhibits than ever before. Microsoft had a medium size truck or van.
Hp and others didn't even bring examples of some of their premiere products. Hp didn't bring a 9500 laser printer, the successor to the very popular 8500-8550 series of machines. Why? They didn't know.
I found the same to be thing true all over the floor. Most of the vendors were at best second tier, with a few exceptions, and the exceptions had, as I've said, a much reduced presence.
A large part of the exhibition for the first time that I can remember, was devoted exhibits from China, Argentina, and others. This covered at least one third of the little froor sapce that was being used.
While I can't say that there was nothing of importance being shown, it was hardly worth traveling to NYC for. I live here, and thought that.
The only thing I found of actual interest was that I was able to buy the Harmony Remote for half price.
