Hey, I Just Bought an IPod!

Posted by Harry McCracken | Wednesday, July 21, 2004 8:21 PM PT

Time flies. It seems like just yesterday, I was writing here about the reasons I wasn't an IPod owner. And today? Well, today I own an IPod--a shiny new 40GB one, in fact.

What happened? Well, both PC World and Digital World need to review the new model, and simply hiking down to our neighborhood Apple store turned out to be the expedient way to get one. (I got there and joined the line of other folks buying them, at a special counter that was more or less dedicated to that purpose.)

I may be an IPod owner, but I'm not yet an IPod user--I turned my purchase over to a couple of coworkers who will put it through its paces for projects we're working on. Stay tuned for their thoughts--and for mine, once I get it back.

And thanks to all (well, most all) of you who have been participating in the lively feedback to my posting yesterday. (Lengthy note to certain folks: I have indeed used IPods, I just didn't own one until today. And I said that IPods don't let you create on-the-go playlists--plural. I'm hardly afraid of Apple products; I've used them for longer than I've used Windows ones, and happily tote a Powerbook that's probably the best notebook I've ever owned. I'm a little amazed that anyone would be offended by my simply saying that the IPod is terrific, but not perfect. If you love the IPod so much you hate people who criticize it, you love it far more than I'll ever love any electronics product.)

Congrats, Harry. I got mine today too -- and it, too, is not in my hands, since it's off at a photo shoot.

People take fandom to an extreme, you see it on Video Game consoles, OS, it is almost like human nature to just grab a thing and attack anyone that might think your thing is not the best think in the world.

Too bad you can't replace the batteries on the darn things if they die. Sending it in to Apple at a cost of about 200 dollars plus shipping and handling is a bit frightening.

I dont own an IPod myself, would like to someday, but they all seem the same to me in the sence that they all play mp3 and all other formats. So one is louder than the other or this one has what that one lacks. I just want one i can afford, that will hold lots of music, that will connect to my car stereo and that will be easy to use. IPod is way too expensive for what it does and what i've seen on other player prices. Anyone who has $500 to spend on an MP3 player must not have a problem getting just about anything else.Unlike me.

Apples website states that the Ipod is firmware upgradable. Ipod doesn't support wma, or many other music file formats. Is their a group out there that has written a firmware upgrade to support music files formats that apple doesn't feel need to be supported? If so, I would be inclined to buy an Ipod.

Ipods 4th version is an anticpated release, with anticpated features. We all know that the $500 spot is going to be filled with a 60gb version. Apple is just trying to soak in back to school sales. I wouldn't put it past them to release the 60gb in september. Steve Jobs is no fool when it comes to marketing.

Buba should replace his iPod with a dell dj. I hear dell has a buy back program going on right now. Is it weird how apple ipod buyers are switching over to apple computers? Oh wait, that's because the farsical G4 claims and the non-shipping iMac claims may have turned people away....

my friends have had ipods for years, i finally got my own a couple weeks ago. i bought the (then) 400$ 20 gig.. much to my suprise they release the new version this week, and i could have gotten the 40 gig for the same price, with a longer battery life.

my friends who have had ipods for years told me i lost the 00$ because i sat on the fence for too long. that doesn't mean i'm any less angry at apple for sucker-punching me when i could finally afford the unit i wanted.

I hate I-Pods they can't even play the best music format "WMA" and besides creative labs makes one just as good for 40% less money and plays WMA format.

Alright, raise your hand if you did NOT anticipate the negative reaction to the last (iPods are Imperfect) column... I have all Apples and love them, but once, when I suggested the need for a multi-button mouse, I got lectured for 45 minutes on why a one button mouse is vastly superior... criticize Cupertino at your own risk.

Does anyone here actually have 60GB of legitamete (sp) music? I converted some CD's of mine(about 7-8), and that doesn't even fill 1 GB. I just cant image anyone in their right mind paying $500 for what is essentially a big drive. Personally I find those 512MB flash/Mp3 drives more promising....

Mac OSX voted by PC World as the best operating system for 2003.

I can tell the bulk of the posters including Mr Harry McCracken are all PC fans as NONE of them bar "MAC" knows how to spell iPod properly. If you check the back of your little device you will clearly see that it is a lower case "i" and the "P" is in caps. No matter where the word iPod appears in a sentence it is ALWAYS written as iPod as this is a commercial brand name and therefore if written anyother way would be misrepresented.

Regarding the mis informed comments (FUD) about iPods not playing .WMA tracks, they dont play them as such because they dont need to. However the latest version of iTunes v 4.6 will import and convert non DRMed .WMA formated tracks directly from WMP and convert them into .AAC as long as you have the latest version of WMP

Also, the .AAC codec that Apple USES is an opensource codec which is also used by RealNetworks. Apple does NOT own .AAC it does however own the DRM that the iTMS store uses on the songs you purchase. It is the DRM that Apple is not willing to licence to other Music stores. Any company can use the .AAC format.

Cheers Winmacguy
ps. if you want to play games get a Playstation/Xbox etc. If you want computing that is real, virus free, secure and easily networked get a Mac. If you want to keep your job in IT withdownloading virus patches everyday stick with your PC and youll be safe well into your retirement.

"Is it just me, or do the raving flag-waving Apple maniacs just FLOCK out of the darkened rooms they are hiding in when someone says anything disparaging against Apple?"

Its not the disparaging comments against Apple that are the problem.

More the FUD produced from the comments from uninformed PC users.

I take my hat off to MS, they are the worlds greatest software MARKETING company with the most money and the biggest market penetration of OS software on the planet.

I am not saying that the produce the greatest software I am just saying they know how to sell it.

Apple doesnt know how to market their OS but they do know how to produce a secure stable and easy to use OS . Sure you may not be able to play the latest greatest fastest games on your G4 Powermac as fast as a gamer on his or her PC, becasue OSX is not specifically built with gaming in mind. It is build to be an all-in-one solution that is the most stylish design and best performing system that does what it is supposed to do and it does it well.

If your happy with you PC then that is terrific.

I am a PC owner with Win XP (with iTunes) at home and a Mac operator by day. Given a prefference for system and software I would have OSX over XP any day.

Given a choice of server for PC/Mac environemt or just PC environment out of IBM/HP/DELL/Apple Xserve/Xserve RAID for enterprise applications and storage, security, stability and ease of use when considering migration from Win NT/2000 my choice would be Apple Xserve as it beats the competition on price, ease of use and it is secure and Virus free (its origins are from the same BSD Unix as Apples OSX)

I dont like dealing with viruses in my day to day work becasue i would rather get my work out. As far as I am concerned with the right operating system I shouldnt need to worry have my work flow affected by them regardless off how many firewalls I have installed or how often my antivirus gets updated during the day or week.

I just got a really cool MP3 Player. I use the Sandisk Cruzer family of USB drives. I picked up a recent Cruzer Micro 513 MB drive and learned that SanDisk also had a Cruzer Companion. IT cost me $50 and I also have the USB Key. I can listen to MP3 and have a Virus. Ad-ware, recovery disk that is very small. I can even buy more USB drives if I want to.

I'm a Mac owner (iMac & iBook) and a MacJunkie. I love--no--like is more like it, iTunes (the player, not the store). I own a 128 mb Rio MUVO, a simple little device that holds, I think, a paltry four hours of music; however, it is plenty for my needs. I have bought one album and a few singles from iTunes, and alas, I can't play them on my Rio due to iTunes' proprietary encoding. I can play my non-iTunes-purchased music on both iTunes player and my Rio. Several weeks ago, I downloaded a tune from iTunes that I "thought" I was getting free (the Pepsi/iTunes bottlecap promo). Got charged 99 cents (w/tax, $1.04) anyway; didn't dispute it--why bother? Hell, I just won't use the iTunes store anymore after that. Anyway, point is, I have no intention of owning an iPod now or in the future due to Apple's narrow approach to downloaded music playback devices. I don't have $10,000 to fill up an iPod. Apple screwed themselves in the PC market years ago, by not licensing their OS and their stranglehold on the music download cash cow is about to crumble, as more and more player manufacturers enter the market. It's too bad--as much as I love the whole Mac concept, I see Apple killing its iTunes golden goose with this latest rally against Real.

By selling songs at only 99c, Apple makes very little profit from its music store. Though it does make a lot of money because of its sheer volume, the profit is minuscule in comparison to iPod sales. In fact, the whole idea behind the music store is to market the iPod. This is why the DRM is important to them, because they want iTunes to promote the iPod only, and not other music players. The iPod's large capacity works in reverse too, by letting people be more careless with their song buying.

I would have liked the author to present some thoughts on the iPod purchase, but instead the article presents no information and nothing of value except a "stay tuned" notice. In addition, the author has failed to hide his apparent motive, which seems to be, judging by the importance accorded to it in the article, the displaying of a comeback to the negative response to his "non-review" of the iPod. "And I said that IPods don't let you create on-the-go playlists--plural" Ah, I see, you got me there. Though I did not participate in posting of negative comments on that article, I did agree with them. The author had presented no facts, only useless opinions based on nothing, and that is what angered the readers. Now, the author's childish comeback, presenting arguments like the fact that he loves macs, which has nothing to do with his simple lack of good content in his articles, is at least funny to read, if not completely irrelevant. With this current article, he seems to have, once again, pulled a "McCracken" on us: no information, no facts, nothing of value.
In reality, I do respect the work of a chief editor such as Mr McCracken and I realize that readers, such as myself, are perhaps too demanding. So I am sorry if I seemed offensive, but I've nothing better to do. Wishing you a good day,
