Cutting Xbox 360 prices earlier this month proved to be a successful strategy for Microsoft. According to reports Xbox sales have increased by 100 percent since then.
Now, in an effort to boost sales even more for its Xbox game console, Microsoft announced another price cut. This time it's for its Xbox 120GB hard drive that can be added to existing Xbox models. It now sells for $149 - down from $179.
This is good news for those cheapskates willing to tinker. If you buy a hard drive-free Xbox Arcade ($199) and add the 120GB HD yourself, you'll essentially own the equivalent of an Xbox Elite ($399) system for $50 less.
Despite September's surge in sales for the Xbox, the gaming console didn't perform as well in August in terms of sales. In fact, it just barely beat out Sony's PlayStation 3 for that month. Nintendo's Wii console took the prize outselling both, according to market tracker NPD Group.
Overseas, the Xbox is doing extremely well according to data from Media Create, a Japan-based market research firm, even selling out in Japan . Sales figures show only 1044 Xboxes were sold in Japan this week , which either means everybody is sick of it or it's still not available.
The full impact of Microsoft's price drops will be known at the end of this month.
