Chrysler Makes Vehicles Wi-Fi Hotspots

The family road trip may never be the same. Chrysler says it will turn select model Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles into roving Wi-Fi hotspot with a new "Uconnect" option available in 2009.

Using either Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity passengers can link to an on-board 30GB hard drive that can be stuffed with music, video, and pictures. Using a cell phone with a data-plan passengers can also connect to the Internet using Chrysler's Uconnect technology.

Your iPod can also take advantage of the cars Wi-Fi service allowing you to access and control your iPod through the car?s stereo and steering wheel controls.

It is also unknown how much the service will cost, though speculation suggests that pricing could be similar to OnStar or satellite radio pricing. Of course, that leaves a wide range of price between $13-$70 a month.

Personally I'm not sure how good of an idea it is to make cars Wi-Fi hotspots. It sounds good in theory, but I?m sure it won?t be long after the Uconnect system are a reality that we see a corresponding increase in car accidents as drivers try to check their email and delete spam while driving.

Models to get the Uconnect service are: Chrysler 300, Aspen, Sebring and Town & Country; Dodge Avenger, Caliber, Grand Caravan, Challenger, Charger, Journey, Nitro and Ram 1500; Jeep Commander, Compass, Grand Cherokee, Liberty and Patriot.
