Today the largest U.S. Apple store opens in Boston. The opening comes with much fanfare including an endorsement from Boston Mayor Tom Menino and friendly hijinks from a neighboring computer store Tech Superpowers.
The store itself is a three-story affair, with flagship products such as computers and notebooks on the first floor, iPods and accessories on the second floor, and Apple's ever-helpful "Genius Bar" (a fancy way of saying "tech shop") on the third floor. There's a great photo gallery of the various accoutrements over on Boston.com, if you're interested.
However, it's what's underneath the newest Apple store that makes me chuckle.
Not long after the New York Yankees organization dug up the buried uniform of Boston baseball legend David Ortiz from underneath Yankee Stadium did Apple reseller (and the new Apple store's next-door neighbor) Tech Superpowers decide to bury a little present underneath the foundation of the soon-to-open Boylston Street Apple store.
Michael Oh, founder and president of Tech Superpowers, buried one of his company's uniforms; a blue work shirt with the words "Technology for Genius" embroidered on it. Oh and his accomplices carried out the feat last month in broad daylight and were even approached by members of the construction team working on the store.
According to the Boston Globe, Oh said, "We just walked in and started digging a hole and taking snaps. When approached, we explained what we were doing. Luckily, that was the morning that the guy had bought the Ortiz shirt on eBay for $175K, so everyone just thought it was humorous."
So if and when you get a chance to casually browse each level of Boston's gigantic new Apple store, stop and take a moment to remember what lies beneath.
