The Discovery Channel is turning to the power of high definition to bring us restored NASA footage in all of its non-grainy glory. In a multi-part mini-series, set to debut in June, the Discovery Channel will debut When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions.
The footage being shown in the series will detail NASA's first 50 years of space exploration. The documentary, being produced in part to celebrate NASA's 50th anniversary year, will showcase footage from NASA's "secret film vaults" and with the help of Discovery be transfered to high definition for the first time.
The Discovery Channel is also selling DVDs of the documentary $69.95 and making a Blu-ray version available for $79.95.
Highlights include the early days of the Mercury program to put a man in space, the moon landings and the first un-tethered space walk by Bruce McCandless. The documentary was produced for Discovery by Dangerous Films and includes Bill Howard and Richard Dale as executive producers.
To help kick off the new Discovery Channel documentary, 86-year-old John Glenn earlier this week took a trip to Washington. The Orlando Sentinel reports about Glenn's trip and also talks about the footage, saying it's a cross between The Right Stuff and Planet Earth.
We caught a glimpse of the trailer ourselves and have to say that if this is anything like previous Discovery HD programming, it looks to be quite a treat.
