Apple Doubles Storage Capacity of iPhone, iPod Touch

08touch_cflow copy.gif

Apple has doubled the capacity of both its iPhone and iPod Touch allowing new customers to spend $100 more and get twice the storage for music, movies, pictures, and podcasts than available with previous models. Introduced today, the 32GB iPod Touch sells for $499 and the 16GB iPhone goes for $499.

Pricing on existing iPod and iPhone models stays the same. But if you're in the market for a new iPhone or iPod Touch, spending $100 more to double your capacity is a pretty good deal.

Of course the larger capacities may rile some existing iPhone and iPod Touch users as was the case when Apple dropped the price of the iPhone.

Could this be seen as another stab at the early adopters? Of course that was not Apple's intentions, but that is an obvious consequence of an upgrade of this magnitude less than a year after the initial release. But it's okay, early adopters, pull that knife out of your back and listen to what Apple has to say is the reason for the upgrade.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of iPod and iPhone product marketing said in the release, "For some users, there's never enough memory." This is definitely true, especially with music collections shifting completely digital, but Greg, it still stings for those of us picked up a 16GB iPod Touch merely months ago to have a new bigger and better model become available.

It's kind of funny to think about it, but who would have thought the world would get so upset over a product improvement? Isn't that what companies are supposed to be doing?

I just got an iPhone last week and don't care, I'm really happy with what I have. I'm psyched about the software upgrade where you can customize your homescreen with custom web apps. I'm trying to figure out this Skype stuff. Why would I have more than the minimum AT&T phone plan if I have broadband and can just make my calls through Skype? Esp. now that I can have my Skype web app icon on my homescreen? Of course, I haven't actually figured out how to install it yet, but will go to Apple Store! But, until then, has anyone done this? Thanks! Woo-hoo!

So, perhaps you could give Apple some advice as to how long they should wait to improve their products to avoid having people "pull that knife out of your back" over the whole process. Should they wait a year and have folks in the ever forgiving media ride them for their failure to be competitive instead?

Your article is insulting in that it supposes ignorance on the part of the buying public over the pace of technological improvements. Most of those I know think that the product they buy today is already obsolete. They know full well the industry's product life cycle is 6 to 9 months.

What an insulting remark!

It also shows ignorance of the tech world as well, or perhaps a bit of Apple-bashing...

I have been in the IT world for over ten years now, and have always told my customers to buy what they need, based upon their needs NOW, and not to wait for supposed upgrades. Too often, announced upgrades turn out to be vaporware, or, as in the case of Apple are never pre-announced anyway.

So anyone that says they're waiting for the next greatest release is wasting their time.

Buy what you need, based upon your current needs, at the time you need that item. You will rarely be disappointed.

Jobs is outta touch. But then again he has always been a hit or miss kinda guy.

He keeps rolling out one high priced item after another. Soon the elitist, gotta-have-an-Apple-at-any-price, crowd will wear thin. Then he will have to sell to the "average" Joe & Jane. With Americans losing homes at a rate of 7000 per day Steve needs to lower prices and/or offer bundled packages that include free trial movies & songs. Apple has over $15 billion in the bank and can easily afford exciting promotions without denigrating it's pricey elitist out-of-the-box-thinking sex appeal .

He owes it to shareholders to drive up sales. Right now they are scratching their heads in disbelief.

Many are wondering if r he's lost his game once again. Maybe he's intentionally tanking the stock to buy AAPL at a discount after sinking fromr all these pathetic over-priced roll-outs. LOL...Kinda reminds me of Mel Brooks "The Producers" or Pete Rose gambling on his own games. Not so LOL for shareholders.

I'm sorry, but I'm tired of hearing about early adopters who are getting upset because of product improvements. That's the price you pay for the bragging rights. And that's the reason I didn't get an iphone right of the bat. Like they were going to stay at 8G for that long when you've been able to get a 16G flash card for months.

I really dont see how this is "Apple Bashing" MAC is known for coming out with something "better" only months after the initial release! If it wasnt a problem then everyone wouldnt complain about it, plus you dont think they didnt have the ability to put more memory in the iPhone 8 months ago? Dont be so nieve as to think that the "technology" was not there 8 months ago! Apple loves to screw the MACites over and over again cause Apple is God right!! Go sip your Latte and sit in front of your fire and play around with your MAC Book Air, just dont sit to long, cause you cant put another battery in it!!
