Online Storage Service Xdrive Gets a Big Update

Drag & Drop from Desktop to Xdrive.JPG

LAS VEGAS- AOL showed off an impressive update to its online storage service Xdrive which includes BlueString – a Web-based application for simplified sharing of images, video, and music over the Web. The update also includes a big update the look and feel of the Xdrive online storage service.

The updates will be available to the general public starting February and includes the addition BlueString. BlueString has been available in beta mode, but officially goes live in February as well.

The BlueString application is essentially a media sharing service that allows you to easily mix video, photos, and music from your local PC, Xdrive online storage account, or even services such as Facebook to create a sharable multimedia program.

In a demo of BlueString it was impressive how easy it was to create a multimedia slideshow. But, at least for now, the program seems very basic.

AOL is working with Adobe Web-technologies Adobe AIR and Adobe Flex with this release. AIR and Flex will be the underlying browser technology allowing AOL to deliver a slick Web browser base application that blurs the line between working on the Web and on a desktop application.

Both Xdrive offerings are free. AOL allows anyone to sign up with the service and receive 5GB of free online storage. Pay service offerings start at $100 a year for 50GB online storage.

I kinda like/liked X-Drive...in the past. AOL's running it? No, thanks.
