Jobs: iPhone, iPod Touch to Get Third-Party Apps

It's about time: In a posting on Apple's site today, Apple chieftain Steve Jobs confirms plans to allow third-party application development for the iPhone and iTouch. After months of hacker activity and independent attempts to create native applications for the iPhone, Apple says it will provide a legitmate path for developers with the release of a software developer's kit.

Due in February 2008, the SDK will allow application developers to create applications for both of Apple's multiouch devices. Jobs says the delay in releasing an Apple-blessed SDK rests with the need to balance the addition of third-party applications while at the same time protecting the integrity of the iPhone/Touch environment from security breaches (viruses, malware, and the like).
