Apple confirmed its upcoming Leopard operating system will be released Friday October 26. The price tag for its Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is $129. Apple.com and Apple resellers are taking pre-orders now.

Apple touts the operating system as introducing 300 new features. One of the new features is Quick Look which Apple says is a way to "instantly see files without opening an application." Another enhancement has been to Finder which will now let you quickly browse and share files between multiple Macs.

With this release Apple also bundles the complete Boot Camp release, previously available only as a beta. Boot Camp is a Mac program that makes it possible to run Windows natively on Intel-based Macs.

Other features include:

* A new desktop which includes a redesigned 3D Dock with Stacks, which is a new way to organize files for quick and easy access with one click.

* Time Machine lets you back up all of the data on your Mac, find lost files and even restore all of the software on your Mac.

* Spaces gives you a new way to organize work by creating customized desktops which can contain only those applications or documents needed for each project.

* An updated Finder includes new Cover Flow technology. This is a new desktop sidebar with a simplified way to search for, browse and copy content from any PC or Mac on a local network.

* Updated mail now has more than 30 stationery designs and layouts.

Apple says it will also sell a Mac OS X Leopard Family Pack geared toward a single-household which gives households a five-user license for $199.

Leopard requires a minimum of 512MB of RAM and is designed to run on any Macintosh computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5 or G4 (867Mhz or faster) processor. Full system requirements can be found here.
