ArsTechnica, Wired, and several other news outlets are reporting that Jammie Thomas, the Minnesota woman accused of illegally sharing music files on Kazaa, has been found guilty of willful copyright infringement. Thomas faces $222,000 in penalties after the jury found in favor of the RIAA this afternoon.
The jury ordered Thomas to pay $9,250 for each of the 24 songs she was found to have shared, though they could have awarded as much as $3.6 million or as little as $18,000.
The case was the first of the RIAA's over 20,000 file sharing lawsuits to reach a jury trial, and the verdict was reached after two days of testimony and five hours of deliberation.
