E-mails Promise Anonymity, Deliver Attack

Posted by Erik Larkin | Thursday, September 06, 2007 5:43 PM PT

Keep an eye out for the latest attack wave from the Storm Worm: a fake e-mail plug for the Tor anonymous surfing tool with a subject line of "Careful, you.re being watched."

According to Tor's actual site, the e-mail attempts to lure victims into downloading a file that is named tor.exe but is actually malware (presumably, the storm worm). Sophos has a post up which includes what appears to be an image of the e-mail body.

The mis-named Storm Worm, which is actually a bot, is one of the most virulent pieces of malware out there right now. The recent flood of fake e-card messages was another attempt to spread the attack app, and we can expect to see plenty more such attempts.
