Apple Updates iPhone Software

The first iPhone update has arrived. And from the looks of it, the update--software 1.01, delivered by way of iTunes--focuses on patching security holes in the Safari Web browser. Apple has also released new versions of its Safari browser (now at version 3.03) for Windows and Mac.

On Howard Forums, where the update was first reported, most users performing the update reported everything went smoothly. The update is 7.1MB in size, and takes 10 minutes or less to complete. According to Apple, when the iPhone is docked, iTunes will present you with the option to install the update.

Apple's own notes about the update center around a handful of changes that plug recently discovered bugs that allow malicious Web sites to take advantage of users. In a classy move bound to help bolster the nascent iPhone community, Apple gives credit to those who reported the issues.

Although Apple is publicizing the security bent of this update, the update actually packs other tweaks. A discussion thread on Apple's forum details many of the changes users are noticing over there. Reports are flying that users are no longer experiences crashes while browsing and playing music, and that there's a noticeable improvement in volume level. Another tweak: You can now manually drag content to the iPhone in iTunes.

Several users on Howard Forums report that the update adds greater customization to the passcode; and, that IMAP folder support for e-mail has been fixed.

Not everything seems rosy, though. On the Apple forum, some users have reported they've lost their SMS messages, contacts, wallpaper, and other settings. And on Howard Forums, users who've hacked their iPhones are experiencing troubles with the update: They report receiving an "unknown error" message that caused the iPhone to crash (the phone then initiated a full restore and update).

Call me old-fashioned. But telephones are just not what makes my day. My sweet mamma once told me, "Never love anything that can't love you back". Well, if this toy is what makes your life complete or is what you need to feel whole, then fill Apple's bank account to your heart's content.

So, Doug--

Why are you wasting your time (and more importantly, OURS) with your worthless opinion, that offers NOTHING to this topic, and is a total waste of space.

Geez...too much time on your hands, or WHAT...!?!?!

Personally, my iPhone has made my life infinitely easier, and a LOT more fun, and now, it just got better...!!

Thanks Apple...!!
