The secret is out. Pictures of every single page of JK Rowling's latest book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," appear to be available on BitTorrent days before the book goes on sale. According to the Web site TorrentFreak.com (which is down right now) the book is available as two files from BitTorrent.
PC World confirmed a book that appears to be "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" is available. I looked at the first ten pages of the apparent book and if it is a fraud it's a very convincing one.
The posting comes days before the book goes on sale 12:01 A.M. July 21.
The download of the apparent pirated version of the book is made up of 759 poor-quality JPEG images. The pages are pictures (not pages scanned with a flatbed scanner) of the book lying open on rug with a hand holding the spine of the book open.
Good luck squinting to read this off a computer screen. You'll be needing glasses twice as thick as Harry Potters' by the time you're finished.
(Here is a picture of the files)
In an interesting development it appears that the person who took the pictures of the book left his camera meta info attached to the image files. This is significant because with the camera meta data you can extrapolate the serial number of the camera. And with that information and time authorities could track down who took the pictures.
A bit of background: BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer sharing network that allows people to easily distribute large files between users. Note: The history of BitTorrent (and most other peer-to-peer sharing networks has been fraught with legal battles, so be aware of what you are downloading (Is it legal? Is it safe?) and check your computer for spyware and viruses often to avoid catching a bug.
Also, since's it's Harry Potter week, perhaps you'd be interested in PCW's review of the new Harry Potter game, Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix.
To the writer:
If you are going to obscure your username under windows make sure you do so for both the address bar AND the window title. Also, your name is at the top of the article, so the effort seems slightly pointless.
Oh, I see what you mean. Maybe he didn't take the picture and got it from a friend or online...
Authorities cant do anything with a serial number if he - or she - did not register the product or paid in cash. Even so. The suspect could say that he sold or lost the camera.
I hope the little Socialist weasel that posted the book to BitTorrent is given up by someone who knows him or her and what they did. A reward should be issued. This kind of behavior warrants felony jail time or a trip to Siberia where everything is free. I can't believe how many people feel they are entitled to someone else's work for nothing. Pathetic.
Well the Harry Potter book was leaked by www.luelinks.net
They even have a posting that's mocking this very article on there
Err, when did leaking something have anything to do with socialism? :-)
