Yahoo Nixes Musicmatch Jukebox

Posted by Erik Larkin | Monday, July 09, 2007 11:31 AM PT

Yahoo is saying goodbye to its Musicmatch Jukebox program, and in a move highly reminiscent of its ongoing Yahoo Photos shut-down is migrating users to Yahoo Music Jukebox. The company says it has discontinued distribution of the program, and as of August 31, it "will no longer be offering Musicmatch services (On Demand, Radio Gold, Music Store) to existing subscribers."

Yahoo says to continue using the subscription services users will need to use a migration assistant app to move to the Yahoo Music Jukebox program (available via links on the announcement page). When you do, the Yahoo Music Unlimited service will replace Musicmatch On Demand.

According to a Slashdot post and user comments on Yahoo's Music Jukebox forum, a number of users are less-than-happy about the move. Some music with Musicmatch tags won't currently play in YMJ, according to Yahoo, and users say Music Jukebox lacks other Musicmatch features.

I don't use Musicmatch myself, but this move sounds much like what's happening with Yahoo Photos. Just when I started moving my photos to Yahoo's service, which offered free unlimited storage, full-size downloads and a nice interface, the company announced plans to close down the site. Users will have to move their pics to Flickr (now Yahoo-owned), Photobucket, Shutterfly or Snapfish by September 20.

Not everybody can even downgrade to Yapoo's jokebox. In my case, the site told me I need to buy a new computer and get a new OS to go with it. With what I read on slashdot and the Yapoo page, you give up way too much for this downgrade. Apparently, you need to downgrade from XP 64 bit to XP 32 bit to even install this thing. You would be better off to go with another product like MusikCube, MusicMonkey, or somthing else. The end of the world is next month for those who have grown accustomed to all the functionality of MusicMatch Jukebox. There is life after Yapoo and their Jokebox.

I paid for MusicMatch Jukebox Plus and ALL future lifetime versions and now I get this "Yahell Music Jokebox". Yahoo won't comment on ALL of the 1000's of complaints they are getting on their message board which is at http://mb.music.yahoo.com/music/Support/forumview?bn=mus-ymefeedback . I hope the media picks up this story and runs with it. We are all talking about a lawsuit.
Here is a list of what people are missing with this system they made us take...
1. Give us migration tools that work and are more modular (so I can re-try importing my MMJB play lists, ratings, etc., without a total uninstall/reinstall).
2. Let me close the ?Album? pane to get that real estate back.
3. Let me close the ?Artist? pane and maximize the bottom center pain to the view MMJB ?Library? used to have.
4. Let me ?undock? all the panes and components so I can give YM the look and feel I want.
5. Make the panes (components) resizable. Too much real estate is given up to half empty panes like the navigation and ?now playing? (formerly ?Current Play list?, in MMJB).
Let me export play list to TXT files for use with other labeling programs (like those that support Lightscribe).
6. Support Lightsribe Labeling.
7.PLEASE... make the tag function in YJB "AT LEAST" as good as the super-tagging capabilitiy in MMJB.
8.My playlists, Genre's and Personal Ratings how ever did NOT migrate. And I really do not care to re-tag and re-rate 6,681 songs tyvm. I want migrations tools that WORK. And I don't want the 2nd oldest Help Desk answer in the world (reinstall). And yes, I have already turned it off and on again.
9.They do appearently support skins (edit, preference, mini mode & skins) but I haven't seen any other than the default yet ("SlipStream") and have see nothing on how to create one as yet.
10. No way to compress the library entries - I have to see EVERY song in my library (tedious)
11.No ability to add album art to library
12.No way to export song titles (MMJB offered file format choices - this has NOTHING!)
13.Ratings disappeared after "migration". 1000's we had already edited OUR way in MMJB was deleted.
14. Genre's disappeared after "migration". 1000's we had already edited OUR way in MMJB was deleted.
15. No "Repair Broken Links" button
16. No way to view playlists on a portable device so you can add and move songs within a playlist.
17. Print CD Label does not work
18. Add custom views like MMJB had! I want to be able to remove the panes and then use the library to manage my library like I did in MMJB.
19. inability to import any art files. This would include standard album artwork as well as custom art files available with old MusicMatch.
20. lack the ability to edit songs in the "PLAYLIST" unless they are currenntly saved in your Yahoo music library.
21. the Gracenotes database that is currently being used by Yahoo is laughable. It is so slow nor does it allow any supertagging of an entire CD/Album.

2 other things missing. Instead of 99 cents a song, you're forced to pay 6.00 a month plus 79 cents a song. Also, you can't record using the MIC or INPUT modes as I could before (using Plus).

I totally agree. One other thing that bugs me about this Jukebox is if I change the view within an artist to be in order of album and track# in sequential order, the next time I open that artist it goes back to the defaul view. So every time I open an artist I have to reorganize the view!! Can't this thing remember how I want the view to be?? I used Musicmatch since 1999 and never had a problem. This thing blows. Absolutely correct about not being able to record from line-in. So much for transferring your old cassettes or vinyl straight into your jukebox. Now we have to use an outside program and then re-add it to the library. Nice downgrade. Supposedly Yahoo says they are using the same people who came up with Musicmatch for this piece of crap. I somehow doubt it.

What have yahoo done to Musicmatch Jukebox, the only player that we need. The new Yahoo Music Jukebox is a bullshit and he can't compare with Musicmatch. Why they stopped producing Musicmatch, it has a lot of features, and its very easy to use. The best player ever created before (remember that was and is the world's best player) was killed. I used Musicmatch since 2000 and im using it again. When I installed Yahoo music jukebox after 5 min. i removed it from my computer because was horrible and no more will become a better music player like Musicmatch Jukebox and I don't think that producing Yahoo music jukebox are the same engineers that produce Musicmatch because the engineers of musicmatch have done in the years a beatiful and massive work, and the result was MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX. Turn back Musicmatch. LONG LIFE TO MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX........... FOREVER MUSICMATCH. Yahoo! put of your hands from Musicmatch Jukebox.

Yahoo Music Jukebox IS the biggest joke and worst downgrade of a program I have ever seen. Besides the previous mentioned items, you can't preview a song before adding to playlist, the program is EXTREMELY SLOW when working with a large library or playlist. Sharing playlists, and now playing, make me feel like I have opened a path for hackers and other problems. Why does Yahoo want or need to know how many times I play a song?
Read the fine print on About Yahoo Music Jukebox, portions of the program are based on the work of the makers of MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX. Only takes one thing from original to qulify using that statement.

I paid for lifetime upgrades on MUSICMATCH JUKEBOX 10, and Yahoo has set this back to worst than version 5.0. I feel soldout.

Yahoo quit invading my privacy and get working on making Yahoo Music Jukebox an inprovement not a gutted, slow and trashed program.

I just "downgraded" to Yarubbish too and within the hour I had removed it and reloaded Musicmatch V09 (it doesn't have the Yahoo upgrade splash screen); glad I kept a copy. I know I can't use all MMs features anymore but it IS a good player and I CAN use VBR and I CAN convert my files with it. I knew the Yahoo player would be dreadful as most of what Yahoo does, IS! I should have known better. I can understand how frustrated ex-MM users are. Yahoo even deleted a simple website I set up for a friend as I put an external link in his site to mine! They actually told me this was against their rules - maybe but what do they think the Internet is for I ask? They are a nonsense organisation and I shall NEVER use their services. There are better things around, Winamp & E-Music for example! Musicmatch RIP you are sadly missed!

I have, and still use, MusicMatch. I paid for MusicMatch Jukebox Plus and all future upgrades and now I'm forced to this "Yapoo Jokeshocks". It's not a upgrade it's a downgrade. All of the features that made MusicMatch an excellent program are gone. !. Yahoo steals all the features I paid for, puts nag&spyware on my computer, and ask me to pay for it !!
The music player hogs RAM, is buggy, and basically takes over your music collection, relabeling all your mp3 files, and sounds like sh*t. The interface must be made by a child back in 1995. it's ugly.
Yahoo has crammed so much paranoid DRM and spyware into this program, that it is like a virus on your hard drive. The DRM and anti-piracy layers of protection open up security holes on your machine that allow hackers to install keyloggers
I can only say, don't touch it !, get rid off it. Yahoo musicbox socks! Keep your old MusicMatch, you can get rid of Yahoo?s ?Upgrade? nag screen by renaming ?C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\offer

Yahoo music player = JUNK. I installed the player and all it would do is lock up, so I unistalled it. I would gladly pay for Music Match Juke Box again for a liftime use. In fact I would pay 2 or 3 times if they would bring it back. It's just that good of a MP3 player. If I'm forced into the Yahoo then I'll use Windows Media Player.

And now, after this entire mess just a few months later, ... Yahoo is SHUTTING DOWN their music server (February 2008) and "will be redirecting users to Real Networks? Rhapsody service" ! See: http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/02/03/yahoo-to-shut-premium-music-services-redirect-users-to-rhapsodyfor-now/

Yahoo has turned into a BAD joke !

DBAREMIG -- Thank you so much for letting us know how to get rid of the horrible nag and update screens! I've been tryiing to figure it out for months!

I got rid of Yahoo and am happily using MusicMatch Version 9, and still have my Supertagging and all the features I love that Yahoo doesn't offer. I have all versions of MusicMatch -- got them from olderversions.

And again Yahoo f.......d with the new move to direct the musicmatch and yahoo music subscribers to Rhapsody. WHYYYYYYYYYYYY... What's the matter with you Yahoo, why you don't listen all the people that need back Musicmatch Jukebox. The best move and the only thing that Yahoo music team can do is to bring back Musicmatch and to create the new Musicmatch jukebox v11 with all the old features of v10 and not going to search media players that Musicmatch users don't need. All the people need the great features of the old Musicmatch. Im using Musicmatch everytime and never will install any other music software because doesn't exist another music software better than Musicmatch Jukebox v9 or v10. Yahoo try doing something better and stop doing jokes with musicmatch subscribers that paid for the world best player. Turn back Musicmatch.

I paid for MusicMatch Jukebox Plus and ALL future lifetime versions Plus -DFX and all future versions - then they switch to yahoo - So now I paid Yahoo musicmatch and DFX for yahoo and now they do it to me again. I lost music that I paid for from musicmatch and yahoo you can't even log into your account records - Ok so now I need to get all my emails of payments and I will sue them for all lost information and music and my time I spent trying to get this all to work. NO I'm sorry? whats up with this bait and switch tactic they pulled? - They should of informed me before I paid for it - oh the small print? - classaction case easy. But I will file and if it all does not work out - let me find the building they run this all out of and I will go and get my hardware for free and anythig else that looks like nice stuff. well what ever is worth the money they owe me at least.

Maybe I will visit the homes and see what they got I can have - they did it to me.

Sell me some more swamp land

Well ... after trying Yahoos shtbox, and then looking around for better models I reinstalled Musicmatch, and still use it exclusively to organise and play my music.
To be honest, I've never liked much that Yahoo has to offer.
Musicmatch was perfect as it was.
Why fix it if it isn't broken ?
