Microsoft's LiveStation Internet video platform is months away from its debut, but is already being hyped as a "Joost Killer," among other things. Microsoft Research in the UK co-developed the new video service with the Cambridge, UK-based startup Skinkers. Microsoft says the site is based on its Silverlight technology, and will use peer-to-peer technology to do things like stream live TV at high quality over the Internet. A video demo of the new site, which is now in limited beta, can be seen here.
The announcement of LiveStation at the NAB show in April was lost in the noise around the launch of Silverlight itself, but is now attracting attention as Microsoft's entry in the contest to roll out the best-performing Internet TV service. When the beta is opened to more users, we'll let you know if LiveStation looks as good as Microsoft and Skinkers are making it sound. Skinkers CEO Matteo Berlucchi says they companies hope to have LiveStation 1.0 ready by October.
