iPhone Reportedly (already) Hacked

Posted by Tom Spring | Thursday, July 05, 2007 7:02 AM PT

Noted hacker Jon Lech Johansen claims on his blog "so sue me" he has figured out a way to activate an iPhone without having to subscribe or connect to AT&T's wireless service. Details on how to bypass AT&T have been posted to his site under the blog headline "iPhone Independence Day."

Read the news story here.

Johansen writes: "I've found a way to activate a brand new unactivated iPhone without giving any of your money or personal information to (AT&T) NSA."

Once "activated" using Johansen's method the iPhone lacks phone capability, however can be used as an iPod and used to connect to Internet via a WiFi connection.

Visitors to the Web site who have posted comments say Johansen's hacking instructions worked for them.

Johansen is far from the only one working to bypass Apple and AT&T's activation process.

Johansen is also known as "DVD Jon". He earned the title for his part in creating and releasing code in 1999 that broke DVD copy protection.

Would you want an unlocked iPhone, unable to make phone calls? Do you think Apple or AT&T will sue Johansen as his blog "so sue me" taunts?

YES, everybody wants the iPhone UNLOCKED, carrier free, and global.
