Where 2.0: Timelapse Maps from Trulia

Note: We were having a bit of trouble with our blogging tools yesterday, so here are a couple of posts from my colleague Dennis O'Reilly out at Where 2.0.

Nothing brings home trends in the housing market like watching the ups and downs for yourself via animated maps. Real-estate Web site Trulia has joined with digital map creator Stamen Design to provide a view of historical trends in property values and other demographic data at Trulia Hindsight. Among the map animations are ones illustrating Detroit's population decline in the last quarter of the 20th century, 100 years of housing booms and busts in Miami, and the transition of San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood from warehouses to nightclubs, restaurants, and office space.

The Flash animations plotting home prices are transposed on satellite images of the area. As captivating as the ebb and flow of the multicolored dots can be, I wasn't always clear on their significance. More than once I thought I was watching a game of Tetris on autoplay.
