Dell has put up a few technical details on what Linux aficionados can expect from the upcoming Dell computers that will ship with Ubuntu 7.04 (the Feisty Fawn release).
According to the blog posting at direct2dell.com, Dell will be offering a smaller range of peripherals for the Linux machines compared to what is offered with other OSs, so that it can keep to hardware that has mature and stable Linux drivers.
For those drivers, the company says it will use open-source when possible, and will use partial open-source or closed-source drivers when there isn't an available open-source driver. The blog cites Intel wireless cards and Conexant modems as hardware without open-source drivers.
Audio and video codecs will be limited, Dell says: "we are not including any support for proprietary audio or video codecs that are not already distributed with Ubuntu 7.04. These include MPEG 1/2/3/4, WMA, WMV, DVD, Quicktime, etc. We are evaluating options for providing this support in the future."
For printers, Dell recommends having PostScript-capable printers for use with the coming Ubuneu system.
