
Later today, Samsung officially announces its second-generation ultra-mobile PC called Q1 Ultra.
The rev is a revamp from the older Q1 announced one year ago today. The updated Q1 adds some welcome improvements, most noticeably at a split-QWERTY keyboard for thumb typing and a more robust support for a wider spectrum of wireless protocols. Samsung also pays a lot more attention the display adding LED backlit 1024-by-600 screen.

The Q1 Ultra UMPC is available in a number of configurations, starting at $799. It will be available at retailers Best Buy, NewEgg.com, Tiger Direct, and others.

Four Different Models
The entry level Q1 Ultra-EL ($799) is configured without a camera, fingerprint reader or SD/MMC slot. It does have the 600MHz Intel Ultra Mobile CPU, 1GB of system RAM, 40GB hard disk drive and Windows Vista Home Premium. The model ships late May.
If you want a camera you'll have to fork over $1149 for the Q1 Ultra-XP model. This unit comes with an integrated camera, fingerprint reader and the SD/MMC slot. It also has a 800MHZ Intel Ultra Mobile CPU, 1GB of system RAM, 60GB hard disk drive and Microsoft Windows XP tablet Edition. Model ships June.
The top of the line Q1 Ultra-CMV ($1499) ships with same bells and whistles as the Ultra-XP but comes with an integrated HSDPA cellular modem, 800MHz Intel Ultra Mobile CPU, 1GB of system RAM, 80GB hard disk drive, and Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium. Model ships in August.
A fourth Q1 Ultra-V model costs $1199 and ships with 800MHz Intel Ultra Mobile CPU, 1GB of system RAM, 60GB hard disk drive and Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium. This configuration includes the camera and SD/MMC slot. The fingerprint reader is not supported. Model ships in May.
