Joost: We're A Little Red-faced

Posted by Mark Sullivan | Friday, May 04, 2007 1:17 PM PT

Joost, the much-hyped Internet video service brought to you by Kazaa and Skype inventors Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, says its having trouble delivering stable video to its growing userbase. Joost officially launched May 1.

From the Joost blog post today titled "A litte red-faced":

As you might have discovered already, we're having some problems with the central servers in Luxembourg... We've been flooded with demand, which is fabulous and ultimately will make the system stronger, but since it's unaccustomed to this level of usage it's stumbling a bit, whereas we'd like it to be sprinting.

I'm watching Joost right now (yes, at work) and the picture on many channels is choppy at best. It's a little hard to watch. Also, at the moment, it takes 20 seconds or more to change channels on Joost.

Joost's advertisers can't be too happy. They began paying for the ads they've been running on the service just last Tuesday.

"Thanks for your patience...we're getting there," the Joost blog says. Ouch.

I am surprised about this. I had been reading in time that joost is great. I guess that the anly way to see is to be invited to view it. I have to admit that I am intigued with the idea of TV on my computer. The amount of tv available here in NZ is lowso it would be nice to check it out

No Sci Fi channel , HBO, History, Discovery etc. I don't want an "International Channel." It has to compete with Satellite..

Joost offers nothing new. it has taken the concept of videowebgate.com, made it a web 2.0 (another registration, and another blog and sharing once again) typed the word Beta (have you noticed they are all betas ? and... hop straight to the cold water. These guys may have money but nothing more.

The Joost Beta came out less than a month ago; and they went straight into commercial release. That is how commercial companies force their technicians to launch stuff. They have to get it out there immediately. I accept that and I am giving them the time they need. It is brand new TV concept that uses peer-to-peer to aid distribution. It shows full screen video and it can/will scale to distribute future high def. That takes a critical mass of peer-to-peer users (as well as more server farms around the World). Similarly it takes channels to jump on. SpikeTV just joined. CNN is coming. It is new, bomentum is required. I'd like to see videowebgate.com deliver full screen high def. So buy AppleTV, hack it and install Joost. You'll have your own dedicated peer-to-peer free tv server in your living room.

If anybody would like a trial of Joost, just drop me a line. I've got two invites for the first to ask. mathewpriest@gmail.com

That's the spirit! I'll invite anyone who asks today (6th May). jallan01@gmail.com.

I don't know why the computer magazines say Joost is 'live'. Not on their website. Joost is still beta, they are just expanding the beta. It takes a lot to get a fully distributed computer network up and running. The Joost interface is really good and is going to be a great competition to the satellite/cable duopoly (once you get it directly on your tv).

About 100 people have taken me up on that offer for Joost. Each takes ten seconds to process. The book closes in four hours!

I think that those new Joost users should register and post their feedback. Its probably choppy, a little hard to watch and takes 20 seconds or so to change channels... ...but so what. It didn't do anything three weeks ago.

I would really appreciate an invitation to view Joost. I'm a college student and I dont really have enough money left over to pay for cable. Which isn't worth the money anyway in my opinion. So, I would really like to try Joost out... If anyone can provide me with an invitation that would be great!

Don't post comments asking for an invite. Just email. Post comments on what you think about Joost once you get an invite.

if you have only 512 of ram then forget this software, or else just watch your cpu go to the limits , what does it offer that isnt on the internet already? NOTHING!! the likes of sopcast tvu tvants already give free tv, with live tv that will run on your pc without bogging you down. ive tried joost and its shite it doesnt even offer good live tv channels, this software is a joke.in my opinion people will download it outta curiosity but they wont go back to it NO WAY
