Cingular/AT&T announced today that it will offer a video sharing service to customers on its 3G network.
It will work just like placing a phone call. You dial the number and the person on the other end will see and hear what's on camera--that could be you or another subject.
Video quality and frame rate will depend on your 3G connection. Ricks Tucker, video sharing product manager, said the technology is capable of streaming video up to 15 frames per second, which translates to smooth video. He also said that on the LG C500v, you can do an hour of video sharing before the battery runs out.
Some requirements: Both users must be on Cingular's 3G network, subscribe to the video sharing service, and have a video sharing-enabled phone. Cingular has not announced the cost for this service, though it plans to offer both pay-per-use and package options. The person who initiates the video share will be charged for the call.
Future plans for this service include compatibility with more handsets and the ability to do video sharing between your phone and other devices such as a PC.
